David's Story
I am currently retired after working 40ish years in the aviation world as a mechanic, Director of maintenance and East Coast (US and Canada) Tech Rep for Teledyne Continental Motors where I troubleshot problems with aircraft engines etc. Retirement finally gave me a chance to work almost full time on my #1 passion building street rods and fast cars.
After graduating from St Dominic HS in 63 , I attended MCI in Pittsfield, Maine (1963-64) where I met some of the best people around. In the fall of 64 I was invited to football camp at Dalhousie U in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. I made the college varsity team and played for them until 1966. I realized that chemical eng was not my forte. I attended and graduated from East Coast Aero Tech in Bedford, MA in July of 68 with Master Aviation Tech degree and an FAA Airframe and Powerplant license. I went to work for Western Airlines in San Francisco,CA, Pratt Whitney in East Hartford CT and Maine Aviation Corp Portland Maine as Director of Maintenance until 2/82. the east coast of the US and Canada. The beauty of that job was I was based in Scarborough, Maine. After doing that for 26 years and getting tired of flying, doing mechanic maintenance seminars and taking 65ish phone calls aweek about problems...I decided to retire.
In 1968 I was drafted for Viet Nam and left Western Airlines because of that. I returned to Maine to face the music. I wanted to fly helicopters then (thinking back, a dumb idea as over 4500 were shot down!!) The army found my blood pressure was 2 points to high!! and wouldn't accept me and gave me a 5Y status which meant women and children would go before me I guess. I find myself now realizing how lucky I was as many of my friends didnt come back...
I am finding retirement alittle boring so besides a pension and SSI I work partime at Tractor Supply RT 1 in Scarborough..keeps me in gas and car parts!!
I have become a member of the "Over the hill prune juice crowd" at McDonalds/ Tim Horton's in Scarborough and we meet every day at 5 - 8ish AM for coffee and complain about EVERYTHING!! PS..I'm the one without a walker or cane!!..........YET!
