David's Story

Life Well I've been through a lot since graduation. I had married Lisa Hansen in Dec 1979. We had two children, Derek in Dec 1980 and Tabatha in Feb 1983. Lisa and I divorced in 1991 after eleven years of marriage. I had gotten custody of the kids. So it was me and them. I remarried in 1994. It was another local woman Judy Hicks from Winston. We were married five years before our divorce. Too much unresolved baggage from both of our previous marriages. I have dated a few people since but, have not gotten serious anymore. Too scared I guesse. Derek was married in 1999 and now has two kids. Tayton in July 2000 and Issabella in Oct 2003. Tabatha was married once and has three boys. Mathew, May 2000, Skyler, Aug 2002 and Colby, Nov 2003. So if your keeping count that is five Grandkids. I still say I'm too young to be a Grandpa. I do really enjoy them all though. I began life out of school by joining the Air Force as a Veterinary Technician. I also performed Decon, Community Health and a few other positions that don't help in civilian life. I spent eight years in the AF before Lisa and I decided to get out. Upon returning to Roseburg I went to work at Roseburg Lumber for five years before going to College. I had received a disability while in the AF and they offered to pay for all my schooling, books, supplies and a monthly income. I was a single parent and needed something more stable than the Lumber industry could offer. So since I had just been laid off at RFP. I thought it couldn't be a better time. I chose Nursing. As an RN I specialize in Adolescent and child Psychiatry. I also do volunteer work for disadvantaged kids. I still enjoy horseback riding and currently have a horse at my mom's in Winston. I am still very active in hunting, camping, woodworking and fishing just to name a few. My newest hobby is SCCA Racing. I have a 1970 Datsun Roadster (about the size and look of a MG)that I got off some property out Roberts Creek Road a few yaers ago. I restored the car to original condition and have since pulled the engine and transmission out. I replaced them with a Turbocharged SR20 motor with a five speed transmission. It is a lot of fun to drive. I use it as my daily driver during the summers. I have also ended up with my parents 1956 Chevy. I have taught Hunters safety in three states, Oregon, Texas, and Colorado. I tauhgt Wilderness first aid and survival in the AF. And am currently teaching Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. After working in Boise, I had some friends living in Maryland who kept sending me emails about jobs out here. I sent out three resumes and filled out two online applications. I endedup with six interv...Expand for more
iews which resulted in five job offers. Johns Hopkins made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I had to take it. I plan on staying out here for maybe six years then relocating back to the West coast. I really miss the Mountains and my family. School I feel Mrs. Johnson was the ost influential teacher I had. She would force you into a leadership role and sit back to watch. If you started to sink she would bail you out and explain how you could have done it differently. you never failed she always set you up to succeed. One of my funniest memories was taking Mr Kinny for a ride in my Mustang. I had challenged the Drivers Ed course and passed it. He was not happy about my being able to skip his class and get credit for it. I did this our Sophmore year. Towards the end of our Senior year he approaches me and says I didn't do a driving exam and if I didn't do it then I wouldn't get credit for the class. I had more then enough credits which, I guesse he didn't know. We left the parking lot in my car with the tires sqealling. Went up to Brockway, over to Lookingglass road, out to Loookingglass. We then hit Dairyloop and Strickland canyon, out to Highway 42 and back to Douglas. All in about fifteen to twenty minutes. He didn't stop screaming until he got out of the car. He even foregot to tell me if I passed or not. I still don't know if I did! If I could do school over, I would ask more people out. After graduating I was able to talk with some of our classmates. Some that I would have liked to have dated in school and was too shy to ask. I found out had i asked htey would have said yes. College I began College in 1991 at UCC. It was rpetty challenging. I was a single parent, working part time at the VA in Roseburg and taking 18 to 21 credits a term. I managed to graduate as a member of PHI Theta Cappa. My next course work was in Baltimore at University of Maryland and at Johns Hopkins University. Military I went into the Air Force in 1979. I began as everyone does entering the AF at Lackland AFB in San Antonio Texas. I completed basic trianing adn stated there for my Tech school. I attended tech school at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonia with the Army. I was never so happy I had joined the AF after being there for three months. My next vbase was Brooks AFB again in San Antonio. After graduation I moved to Castle AFB in California. From there I went to Offitt AFB in Omaha Nebraska, Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota, and then back to Offitt. After Nebraska i was stationed in Colorado at Denver and Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, Texas. There were many short trips elsewhere while I was active Duty. After eight years of not being home as much as I would have liked to I got out.
