Carol's Story

Life Wow! How do you put all these years into this short space. I was born 12/28/1939 in Aurora, Illinois. I went to Brady School, Center School, East Aurora Junior High School, East High School (all on the east side of Aurora) and finally I graduated from West Aurora High School in 1957. I was a shy kid but I was quite a tomboy. I could and would climb trees and jump off garage roofs with the best of the boys. When I was about 14 years old, I suddenly decided I was through being that tomboy! All but my last 2 years of school were spent in the East school district. During those years, I loved to walk out to Phillips Park to ice skate or sled; play after dark with about 18 of the neighborhood kids; go down to the local soda fountain shop; take the bus downtown to meet some friends and roam the various department and record stores; go to the Tom A Hawk club to dance, listen to music, play games and meet people; go to football and basketball games along with other school events. My folks owned and operated a trucking company called Valley-City Transfer, Inc. It did very well financially so my parents surprised my brother (John) and me with a beautiful new house on the west side of Aurora. We moved in around Christmas time in 1955. But along with a wonderful new home came a change in school districts in January. The next 2 years were some of the hardest of my life. I had to leave all my friends and everything that was familar to me and start a new and totally different life at West Aurora High School. I started off on the wrong foot when Mom and I went to register for school. We went to see the boys councilor instead of Miss Winteringham. She make it clear we should have registered with her. I ended up in her English class!?? I was scared to death!! After limping along socially for 1 1/2 years I graduated with the class of 1957. I worked fo...Expand for more
r my folks for a while and in December of 1958 I married Bill Born. We had 2 awesome baby girls. This marriage ended in 1975. The girls were 13 and 16. These were very hard years for the girls and me but we learned so much more than we would have otherwise. Yet blessing and miracles were very common during this time and we came out well ahead of the game. I went to work for MetLife Insurance Company. I worked there for 21 years but had to retire due to illness in 1997. After the girls were married, I decided that I wasn't going to become an old whoa-is-me lady with nothing worthwile to do so I bought a red Fiero sports car and did some traveling. This time period also offered the opportunity for me to take a cruise to the Carribean and one to Hawaii. I traveled to Sitka, Alaska for a month. I have also traveled to Oregon and Kansas. Life has been very good to me. The past 5 years have been the happiest of my whole life. I have 3 Granddaughters (ages 22, 18 and 19) and a Grandson who just turned 12. They are the joy of my life. Six months ago, I moved from Yorkville to the Anderson Farms Apartments for Seniors 55+ in Montgomery. I cannot begin to tell you how beautiful and pleasant it is here. I am learning to speak Spanish and Lakota (American Indian) languages; I am painting with water colors again; I volunteer in a First Grade Class 4 days a week at Circle Center Grade School in Yorkville; and am revelling in my good fortune! In retrospect I have to say that after being divorced for 33 years and living alone for the past 22 years, someone has constantly been (and continues to be) watching out for me and leading me on the path that is truly mine and mine alone! It is my prayer that you are as blest, happy and contented as I am. I have finally found out what my purpose is here on this earth. Sieze the moment and make the most of it!!
