David's Story
The short story: Currently living the ‘retiree life’ in the Galveston, Texas area and still married to my high-school sweetheart of 52 years, Janice (Cole). The longer story: after Hueneme High, a short stint at Ventura College, a failed business in Australia, I returned to Oxnard and convinced Janice to marry me. Less than a year later, I received a draft notice but decided the Air Force was a better idea than the Army. So in 1972, I joined for what I thought would be just four years. However, the Air Force life agreed with us and I reenlisted in 1976 and Janice enlisted that same year. As military intelligence analysts, we saw tours in England, Philippines, Crete, and multiple tours in San Antonio and Hawaii and we raised a couple boys along the way as well. We both retired after 20+ years of service and settled in a little town outside of San Antonio, TX where we both finished our BS degrees. Janice worked at USAA (insurance...Expand for more
agent) then built Toyota Trucks while I worked in the corporate world for a while, then picked up a couple criminal justice degrees and built a successful private investigation company. I served as cub master a few years, Lion Club president for two terms, and avoided getting too involved in local politics. In 2016 we both retired a second time and moved to the Galveston area where our two sons (a marine biologist and a chemical engineer) and granddaughter currently live. We’re kept busy with working on our 85-year house, travel, have Disney & Universal annual passes, antiquing, the occasional cruise, a little fishing, some woodcraft, spoiling our granddaughter, and generally just goofing off. Will probably be getting a ‘second home’ in the Orlando area next year – Jan needs to see Micky more often these days. Since neither of us have any family left in Oxnard/Port Hueneme we’ve only been back a couple times in the past 50 years.
