David's Story

After graduating in 1971, I attended CSU. My first 4 semesters were spent majoring in voice and piano performance. Quitting that — I didn't have the discipline — I tried the Social Work Dept. and hated it. Then, during a rehearsal of "Hello, Dolly," the director suggested I try dance as a major. Dance?! What are you talking about?! Well, one thing led to the next and I moved to N.Y.C. to pursue a dance career. It lasted 14 years, I performed and taught all over the world, worked with a lot of the world's greatest dancers (including Nureyev and Baryshnikov), performed at the Kennedy Center twice, appeared with Leonard Bernstein at the Kennedy Center, and also appeared several times on PBS Great Performances/Dance in America. I also got the chance to work with the Bolshoi Opera, Metropolitan Opera and Stuttgart Ballet, as well as did a lot of guest artist work around the U.S. During a photo shoot for the N.Y. Times in 1981, I managed to twist my spine in 3 directions and the sacroiliac tilted severing a bunch of nerves. I lost the use of my right leg, right arm, back muscles, stomach muscles, and intestines. Literally, I was a mess. The doctors told me I'd be a paraplegic the rest of my life, stuck in a wheelchair and dependent on everyone to take care of my needs. Sorry, I had other plans. After doing Pilates for a year, I walked into the doctor's offices and shocked them all. I then danced for 4 1/2 more years — better and more intelligently than before the accident. Plus, during the period of my rehab, I learned a great deal that has been a saving grace for me about myself and what's truly important in life. Upon retiring in 1986, I was immediately hired by a computer-based training company and became an expert in the field. I worked ...Expand for more
on projects from the first space station at Johnson Space Center to NYNEX, Northern Telecom, American Airlines, Ford Motor, Halliburton Oil Company (won a national award in 1990 for creating a "virtual" office tour), and ran a project at Top Gun in San Diego for 2 years. I then was hired by Anthony Robbins as Director of his Creative Dept., which lasted almost 2 years, and then I moved into my current career of ghost writing books for well-known people. While dancing and developing CBT courses, I was also a counseling therapist for 18 years working primarily with Persons With AIDS and their families on death & dying issues. I did this for free as I couldn't see giving a person with tremendous hospital & health bills yet another bill. I also facilitated a group for married men coming out for 6 years in San Diego. I have just finished writing a guidebook for men going through this transition titled "Married Men Coming Out: The Ultimate Guide to Becoming the Man You Were Born to Be," which I self-published in 2018. I also plan on publishing several other books in the near future titled "Now What? One Man's Search for a Father," "Convergence of Being: Discovering the Interconnection of You, Me, and We," and "Stimulus Addicted: America Adrenalizing Out of Control." My children's novel has just been reviewed by a publisher and I'm hoping it will also be published soon. In 2011 I moved to LA to be with my partner, Richard. We currently live in Reno, NV (7 years) and when Richard retires, we'll determine where we want to land for good (hopefully, Europe — lots of traveling we want to do). Meanwhile, I continue ghostwriting books for a living (since 1995) and I'm the managing editor of CODE M Magazine. And that's a lot of my life in a nutshell.
