David's Story

After graduating from Crawford in 1971, I attended the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where I earned a B.S. in Information and Computer Science in 1975 and an M.S. in Administration in 1976. In June of 1976, I began work as a Software Engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company in Fullerton California. In 1977, I married Mary, who I met at UCI, and who also began work as a Software Engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company. We soon bought a home in Brea, California. We both continued working at Hughes Aircraft Company, or one of its subsequent organizational embodiments during the consolidation of the Defense Industry during the late 1980s and the 1990’s. We both retired in June of 2011, at which time the remains of much of Hughes Aircraft Company was owned by Raytheon. After I had worked for about 2 ½ years at Hughes, I was put into a management position, where I quickly found out I enjoyed doing the actual engineering work a lot more than trying to manage people. After about 1-2 years I returned to the technical ranks until I retired. Mary, on the other hand, got into management and stayed there until she also retired. My first project was a sonar project for the U. S. Navy, where I was able to participate in sea trials held in the Bermuda Triangle. During those trials, the ship I was on was followed by one of the infamous “Russian trawlers”, trying to keep tabs on what we were doing. After that project, I was assigned to an Air Defense project for the U. S. Air Force that replaced the very first computerized Air Defense system for the U. S. er that occupied a 22,000 square foot facility. The purpose of these systems was to monitor any potential Soviet air attacks on the U. S. and allow the U. S. Air Force to control its own airplanes to fend off any such attacks. I spent most of the rest of my career working on Air Defense projects for the U. S. and allies of the U. S. After 9/11, I participated in a project that upgraded the first U. S. Air Force Air Defense System I had worked on, to now consider not only external air attacks on U. S. soil, but also any air attacks originating or continuing within the U. S. boarder. One project Mary and I worked on together was the replacement of the Canadian Air Traffic Control System. This took us up to live in Vancouver, Canada from 1995 through most of 1998. After completing our stint on this project, we returned to our home in Brea, where we still live to this day. For much of our married life, Mary and I have been lucky enough to be able to travel the world. We also became interested in photography, which has allowed us to remember and to share our trips with others. Since our retirements, I have been volunteering at a local elementary school, where I am able to directly work with the students in the classrooms. Mary has been a volunteer as an educational docent at the Santa Ana Zoo, where she supports programs available to Orange County elementary schools. Unfortunately, our travel and our volunteer activities are being curtailed during the current COVID-19 crisis. We are both looking forward to the time when life will return to normal and we can continue our travel and volunteer passions.
