David's Story
What a long strange trip its been! High School was truly a coming of age for me. From feeling like an outcast nerd in Junior High (West) to a Letterman diver on the swimming team, my years at Norwin were among the best in my life. My years at Pitt were right up there too. Then I quickly lost track of favorite people and places when I headed for the hinterlands of Latrobe, PA to work in small-town radio. Latrobe, Connellsville, Uniontown, then finally Pittsburgh is where my career took me. I got married in 79 to a woman who eventually drove me to a nervous breakdown and life kinda leveled out with a down-spin after that. Shortly after radio (and the sales career that developed from it) I found myself, after some major life-drama, alone in Breezewood, Bedford County PA. Everybody who has travelled the length of the PA Turnpike knows Breezewood, "The Town of Motels". I assistant-managed a restaurant there until it went out of business (the whole chain went under in 89) and then settled into a rural small-town life as a "home service" insurance agent. In 1990 I met my present wife and after several years in Bedford County, I discovered Iowa. Iowa City is my wife's ho...Expand for more
me town and it is a very nice place, indeed! I abandoned my life and career (such as it was) in PA and transplanted with Becky and our only son (there was another in the first marriage....God help him!) to Iowa City where, after a shot at insurance here and another slight nervous crisis, I became another of the large community here...over-educated, underemployed people who enjoy life in a liberal college town. For the past 13 years I have been a pizza delivery driver. My lovely wife Becky has provided the other half of our income so that we can afford to own a home and pay absurdly high property taxes...LOL. The boy is 19 now and a year out of high school. And the last I heard from her, my first wife is still in Uniontown and still crazy.
Not an impressive story, I'll admit. But I never was afraid to provide Too Much Information. I'm still that TMI-Guy. Maybe by sharing this, I will encourage others to share their true stories....including those of you who really did go on to set the world on fire. If you wanna find me on Facebook, I keep a page there. I'd be glad to share my life as it is today with anyone who wants to be my "friend". All the best to everyone!
