Life
I joined the Air Force on delayed enlistment, with the guaranteed job of Jet Engine Mechanic, straight out of High school .After basic training in Lackland, Tx. and tech school at Chanute Illinois, I was stationed at Beale AFB in norhtern California.
While there I worked on KC-135Qs, SR-71s, T-38s, U-2s and, TR-1s (or "really cool airplanes" for you readers who are lifetime civilian ;).
After just over two years at Beale I recieved orders to - of all places - Keflavik AFI (Air Force Installation) Iceland. Where I spent a year working F-4Es and T-33s (significantly LESS cool aircraft) in conditions ranging from very cold to freezing my tuckus off.
Despite the lies you may have heard; Iceland is not "green" - yes there is vegetation but, it is sparse, primarily tall grass, and mostly uninteresting (in my opinion anyway) and, it is in fact always cold, though not ...Expand for more
necessarily always snowy.
After Iceland I was stationed at Torrejon AFB, in wonderfully sunny Spain! A significant upgrade for this (nearly) lifelong desert dweller.
I did two years in Spain, working on F-16 fighters (exceedingly cool airplane!) after which I exited the Air force, returned to Az - where I still live - and began working for Garrett Turbine Engine Co. which is now (after several name changes) Honeywell aerospace.
I'm still at Honeywell, still in aerospace. I've been going to school the last couple of years to both keep the grey matter active, and to broaden my knowledge base about my almost lifelong hobby of computers and computer systems.
I have earned college certification in Network Administration and have earned Cisco's CCNA certification. While I do hope this will lead to a job in the IT/IS industry, I'm not urgently seeking a job at the moment.
