David's Story

"Ummmm....teacher, I misunderstood the assignment." (This "My Story" is entirely about grade school. If you want later info, check out the timeline. DMD) My fondest school memories are of good ol' CM; my high school years, after we moved to MI, were just not that fun. But, first of all, I want to apologize to all the ladies that had to put up w/ me in class. Looking back at myself, I was a real jerk. I know I would not like my three daughters having to put up w/ someone who was as condescending as I remember myself. Please forgive me. When I was working at Aggieland Schwinn in TX, about 1985, Marty Hardell was a customer. We remembered each other, me being a classmate of his older brother Matthew, and him being a little brother who hung around w/ Matt! My family visited CM in early '93. It was amazing how everything had shrunk! Going downstairs (where library, and 6th Grade (Mr. Michels) and 7th Grade (Mr. Bergt) rooms were, I had to duck my head because of the pipes. Mrs. Hackbarth was STILL there, and remembered my family. The only teacher still there after 20 years was Mr. Kamprath. Several years ago, while used-book shopping, I checked out the inscription page of "Teenagers Pray", and found, among other signatures, "Mr. Gerald Bergt", c.1999. I've traded some e-mails w/ him since then. He and his wife are down in Fairmont, MN, about 3hrs south of the Twin Cities. Some cool memories from CM? Getting to be an accolyte for church --getting to be in an operetta every two years -- in fifth grade, my brother, Mark (eigth grade) got the lead role in "Jack and the Magic Beanstalk", and my sister, Rachel (kindergarten) was one of the animals (duck) at the fair; I was in chorus then, and again in 7th grade for "Hansel and Gretel" -- I finally tried out for the operetta in eighth grade, and was Tom's rotten half-brother, Sid, in "Tom Sawyer" (obviously casting-against-type, right?!) -- my older brother, younger sister and I all had Miss Bender as a teacher (I think she retired after my sister's class was done w/ her!) -- nice big classes w/ lots of friends (people usually are amazed when I say there w/ 30-35 kids in each of nine classrooms/grades) -- Mr. Michels threatening w/ his "scientifically-designed" paddle -- while learning about LARGE numbers, Mr. Michels telling us "you could NEVER spend one million dollars"! -- I learned more from Mr. Bergt in 8th g...Expand for more
rade science than I did in 9th grade Biology -- my one year that I was sick for picture day (sixth grade), and that's the ONE year they went w/ color class photos! -- being the only "David" for seven years, then in 7th grade, along come David Schrank and David Lewinski -- at a track-and-field day at MLHS in 5th grade, I remember Mr. Boerger asking who was on the 50-yard relay team. When someone mentioned my name, I could see Mr. Boerger's disappointment. That hurt and surprised me, 'cause I thought I was the class super-jock (always competing w/ John Lemberger) -- the Trinity/Freistadt BB tourney in '71; we made it to the championship, but got the second place trophy. I remember Mr. Michels, at halftime, yelling at me to stop guarding guys at the top-of-the-key. They were passing the ball behind me, and their player was making jumpers from the free-throw line. So I've always blamed myself for CM not winning that tourney -- speaking of sports, it was great when the CM men won a softball championship trophy in 1971. My dad was the second-oldest on the team (38 years old) and the starting SS. The men all got individual trophies; I have dad's (Mr. Boerger played CF, Mr. Goll LF, Mr. Michels was catcher. Mr. Boerger had a yellow and a fuschia aluminum bats, the first metal bats we had ever seen)-- I remember all those great Christmas Eve productions, and still have a lot of the scripts (I also have the first issue of the school newspaper, Tiger Tales). Mr. Michels would drill the groups to stand, turn, sit, etc. at precisely the right moment. If we goofed up in practice "BOOM" he'd slam a hymnal down on a pew and tell us to do it again! As the first Kindergarten class at CM (fall 1964) we had a that south classroom in the main bldg (Miss Salzwedel, soon to be Mrs. Schultz, as our teacher). First grade w/ Miss Bender (and half of the 2nd graders, who were split up between the 1st and 3rd grade classrooms), then 2nd grade under the gym w/ Mrs. Andersen from Denmark. Third grade, back in the northwest classroom, w/ Mrs. Ziolecki. Fourth grade and Mrs. Woldt was new to CM. Fifth grade and Mr. Boerger. Then downstairs to 6th and 7th, Mr. Michels and Mr. Bergt, respectively. Finally, Eighth grade, and we get Mr. Boerger again! That 1964 Kindergarten class had 10 boys and 10 girls, and nine years later there were five of the original girls and five of us original boys.
