David's Story
School
I had a few "biggest" crushes in high school, but I think I'll keep that secret for now, not that it matters this many years later. The teachers/coaches who inspired me the most were of course, my track & cross-country coaches, Ed Hackett and Sheree Watterson. Coach Hackett was tough on us, but it made us better athletes as better people. He knew we could always improve ourselves and held us accountable if we didn't try to do our best. Coach Watterson always told me that, if I put my mind to it, I could run as fast and as far as I wanted, and that most of my setbacks were mental. I truly believe that to this day. Finally, there was the late Coach Larry Armstrong, who was my P.E. coach in 9th grade and the school's basketball coach. He was a father figure to so many, including myself, and I have always had a great father. Still, he always seemed to have time to listen to me. He once told me to find something I love to do and just stick to it and learn all I could from it. I miss him to this day.
As for high school as a whole, I would definitely do it all over again. I had some great friends and great times. I'm sure I'll come up with some more memories and add them to this page at a later time.
College
To be honest, I finally gave up on college, after many years of attending junior colleges. If they would just take away algebra, which is so irrelevant in my life, I could have made it ...Expand for more
through college. I'm doing fine without it. I learn from experience more than from a classroom anyway.
Workplace
My first job was working for Pizza Hut in Diamond bar from 1986-1988. I didn't eat one single slice of pizza for about 7 months after I left that job. I was sick of pizza! I eat it now, of course. From 1988-1990, I worked at Kinney Shoes and a couple other places. From 1990-1994, I worked for Mercury Insurance in Brea, California. The location was perfect, but the company morale could have been a lot better. But, micro managing your employees will always make them hate their jobs. Since 1994, I've been working at Word & Brown Insurance Administrators in Orange, California. They treat us very well and I go to work every day feeling appreciated for what I do. I've won a couple of prestigious company awards which makes it even better. When I work hard and get appreciation from others, it makes me only want to work even harder. Success breeds success and failure breeds failure.
Military
I never served in the military, but I probably should have. I like structure, organization, and working with others to reach a common goal. In high school, I thought of joining the Air Force after graduation, to follow in my father's footsteps. I guess my life was meant to go down a different path. I want to make it clear that I respect our armed forces and appreciate their service to our country.
