David's Story

Life Hello All, Lived in Detroit (6 mile and Schaefer) till I was 2 then on to Redford on Beech N of 6 mile till I was 8 then moved across Beech to Sumner and Bennett behind Loretto and between Glenhurst golf course and Claude Allison park and Presbyterian Village. Was in Redford off and on for over 50 years. Lived in Farmington Hills, Ann Arbor and Dearborn Heights, also. Yep, I went to R.U. (and Beech Rd. school, Our Lady of Loretto + Lola Valley Jr. High). Boy, those were the days. Had my dark green '67, 2+2, Mustang Fastback with a built 289, 4 speed running a 389 (I think) gear and used to whale on Camaro's, Firebirds, Chevelle's, even small (327) 'Vettes out on Telegraph or Woodward. Usually lost to GTO's and Super Bees though, don't know why! Used to leave Geigers on Grand River, head out to Farmington then cruise down to Blazo's Big Boy on Michigan Ave. in Dearborn then up Telegraph to 12 mile then over to Woodward and on up past the Totem Pole and Mavericks and all the rest to Teds. What great fun it was. Some summer nights I'd hop on the Harley ('49 K Model) and take a slow ride on down to Plum Street or Belle Isle or I'd just ride the expressways all night. Good way to think and clear your head. I worked at several different jobs...fixing flat truck tires, and doing wheel balancing and front end alignments, then selling tires. Kinda liked sales so I moved on to selling coffee machines to restaurants. Also worked midnights at a gas station in the middle of winter. What a pain, got knocked around and almost robbed 3 times and figured I needed a nice, safe, warm inside job so I got hired at Sinai Hospital. Worked at Sinai from '71 to late '77, then on to U of M in A2 and back again to Sinai in '82 till early '89 I believe. Started out mopping floors in E.R. then in the O.R.. Didn't want to mop floors my...Expand for more
whole life so I took a bunch of management courses, got several promotions and ended up wearing a coat and tie as a Department Head (Director of the Housekeeping Dept.) for the last six years. Met tons of great people and partied (and worked) my butt off. Worked in several area hospitals for years then went into business for myself managing contract and specialty cleaning services for hospitals, medical office buildings and school systems. Met a girl who worked at University Hospital (U of M) in Ann Arbor in the late '70's and dated her for a year then broke-up. Ran into her 15 years later and ended up getting married to her. We didn't plan on having kids as we were older (in my 40's when I got married and she was in her 30's) so much for the plan...ended up with three kids. Now have 13 and 11 year old sons and an 8 year old daughter. Whew! I'm getting to old for this as I'll turn 58 this year ('07). Good thing I'm retired, don't think I could handle 3 young kids and full time work at this age, much nicer being a stay at home Dad. Most everyone I went to school with has grandkids or even greatgrandkids by now and get to relax a bit in their middle age. Not me, oh well, I'm still enjoying life and having much fun with my kids. We spend a lot of time at a local conservation club planting trees and cleaning up the creek and preserving the natural habitat. My wife and boys shoot shotgun (trap) there, I shoot high powered service rifle (M1 Garand) and my wife and I shoot steel plates and defensive pistol. We're not tree huggers and not hunters and not opposed to either. Just like the outdoors and shootin'. Left Redford 2 years ago (it was getting kinda bad) and moved to Webster Township N of Dexter which is about 12 miles NW of Ann Arbor. Got a couple acres out in farm country, nice area for the kids to grow up in.
