David's Story

Long story, but I never expected to be where I am today. In high school I did enough to stay out of trouble but not enough to earn any honors. So, I’m surprised that I have spent my adult life in education and am currently a professor at the University of Rochester. However, my interest over the last fifty years has been to critique education for not adequately promoting creativity and critical thinking. In fact, I’ve spent the last twenty years writing and speaking against New York’s over and misuse of standardized tests. I’ve written six books and 90 book chapters and articles, including my forthcoming book The End of Public Schools: The Corporate Attack on Public Education. nd been a visiting professor at numerous universities. My talk last year at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute (the teachers union) is on youtube. Similarly, life has been more complicated. Married, two great sons (now 30 and 34), divorced, remarried, and renovating a 200- year old house in rural upstate New York: as different from growing up in Levittown than I can imagine. I have only stayed in touch with one person from the class, but hope that everyone is doing well. If there is a reunion next year, it would be fun to reconnect.
