David's Story
Life
I was a total nerd/schoolboy in high school: No dating, girlfriends, dances, proms, etc. After high school, I attended Compton JC; I worked at Manchester Tank and Equipment Company in Lynwood, while I attended JC. I got a degree in criminal justice. Next, I went to CSULA. I joined the Army in '70; got out in '72. I had a plethora of jobs; everything from day labor to cleaning up oil spills for Chevron. I decided to go back to school, on the GI Bill. I attended CSULB and earned a BA in psychology. By then, most of my friends had gotten married. For the next few years or so, I lived out of my WV microbus and traveled between L.A., San Francisco and Vegas, working a variety of day labor jobs for survival money. I moved to the High Desert in '80 (Apple Valley) and got a job as a substitute teacher. I got married in '83 ,got a full-time teaching position (I should've gotten a job as a truck driver or garbage man; I probably would've been better off, but jobs were hard to come by), and a part-time position with the SB Co. ff's Dept. I got divorced in 1999, retired from teaching in 2004, and still work part time for the Sheriff. I'll have to find another job to supplement my retirement and law enforcement work (I don't make enough money, no insurance; good luck for an old fart like me finding a decent job in this economy!) and probably work until I croak; teacher retirement stinks. The "old days" were the best (especially the 60's and 70's . My family consists of a married sister; I was adopted and so was my mom; no branches in my family tree.
Update: I finally found a job substitute teaching (read babysitting) for extra income. What a way to make extra money! If I weren't a cop, I think I'd rather sell drugs-better money and less stress! Kids have surely changed for the worse. They're smart-mouthed, disrespectful and lazy. Good luck America!
Sometimes, I mourn the tenuous grasp of youth, with its sublime innocence and hedonistic pleasures!
PS For all the Bell HS people: I got listed, somehow, as Patricia Odom. I am her son.
