David's Story
David Bradford (Johnson), Executive Director of The Barbara Johnson Foundation, Inc., established in 2007 before his mother's passing. The Foundation, a Non-Profit 501(c)(3) Chairty offers to continue "Spatula Ministries" originally created by Barbara Johnson, world famous Christian author and Humorist, promoting Family Restoration.
Award-winning Christian author and Women of Faith Speaker and co-founder, Barbara Johnson lost her battle with brain cancer on July 2, 2007. She valiantly fought this disease for over six years as well as adult onset diabetes, using these illnesses and her many life challenges to help encourage others during difficult and grievious times.
Known as the "Geranium Lady" after her best selling book "Plant a Geranium in Your Hat and Be Happy", Barbara won the hearts of millions with her wit and humor. She was also known as the "Christian Erma Bombeck". Her 30-year work called "Spatula Ministries", was designed to help parents of gay children get peeled off the ceiling with a spatula of love. me Achievement Award. "Barbara's ministry to the brokenhearted through her publishing and personal appearances inspired millions since 1979," commented Mike Kuyper, ECPA President. "With every book a bestseller, reaching readers with her trademark joy and encouragement, Barbara's story of personal tragedy turned into a legacy of inspiration. We were pleased to present Barbara Johnson with the ECPA Lifetime Achievement Award for her incredible years of service.
Last year Barbara's son David, also known as Larry in her books, established the Barbara Johnson Foundation to carry on the outreach ministry started by his parents. "We are still receiving calls from all over the world for 'The Geranium Lady' from those still seeking her advice.
"I feel so honored and privileged to be able to continue her ministry in aiding those whose lives are torn apart by grief and loss," said Johnson. "What better way to provide a place for others to find that splash of joy or to hear her words or see her on video than on her website."
