David's Story
After West I went East for college and then came back home for law school. I lived at home and Mom packed me a bag lunch every day. Life was good. I then displayed a shiftless inability to hold a job, with three teaching or judicial clerkship assignments over three years, in Miami, Des Moines, and Washington, D.C. In 1981 I finally settled down and took a job with a law firm, where I've stayed ever since, first in D.C. and then, since 1983, in Los Angeles.
Throughout my life I've had just one, mostly understanding spouse (since 1980), just one, mostly perfect, daughter (since 1985), and two just perfectly annoying Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (since c. 1998), all of whom I love dearly. OK, OK, the dogs could leave...Expand for more
tomorrow and I'd never have a second thought about them.
Since 1983 we've lived on the west side of Los Angeles, which for a Minnesotan is paradise. My lasting memory of my first evening in LA was that I was sitting outside on a warm summer night and instinctively started slapping my bare arms--to kill mosquitoes, of course--before realizing that there WERE no mosquitoes!
The best thing about growing up in Minnesota is that the weather teaches us early on that life can be miserable and unpredictable, and so you don't expect much, leading you to experience life as surprisingly kind. By the same token, the challenge in raising a kid in California is that she expects life to be good all the time, and often it isn't.
