David's Story

So, after HS I went to work as a printer. That was short lived, and I went to work at Warminster Hospital developing X-ray film. Got bored, went to EMT school. In 1987 I converted to Catholicism. Then I moved into Philly. Worked for a few ambulance companies and started Nursing School at Frankford Hospital SON/Penn State Ogontz. Got kicked out because I didn't get funding for year 2. So, I went to paramedic school. Worked for Jefferson Univ. Hospital and Trappe Fire Co. While all of this was going on I went to California and Japan (1989) then I met a wonderful woman, Susan (St. Hubert's '83). While we worked and got engaged and married we traveled: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Hungary, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and the Czech Republic. I wouldn't trade those years for anything. Then I took Phila. Fire Department test and didn't get hired as Fireman, but also took Paramedic test and got hired. After working as a medic for 12 years I became a firefighter for the PFD. I had to go through the Fire Academy at 38 y/o alongside of 19 y/o kids. Despite this I came out #2 in the class. While at the PFD I became Recording Secretary of the Philadelphia FF Union. In that position I run the website, PR department, act as office manager and spokesman. I am in my 6th year in that position (You may have seen my on TV or in the newspaper). I have also kept doing graphics work on the side. I do logo's tee-shirts, patches, etc.. Susan and I married in 1994 and I adopted her child (Lauren) and we had three more kids: Bronwyn "Wynnie" (1999), Maeve and Blaise (Twins 2002). Sue is...Expand for more
a hair stylist at Red, Red, Red in Old City. She was named PhillyStyle's colorist of the year in 2005. She is a rockin' mom, wife and professional! Blaise has Asperger's Syndrome and goes to Archangel Academy. He was student of the month two times in 2007-2008. Maeve and Wynnie are avid artists, dancers and soccer players. They attend St. Matthews. Wynnie has won the religion award for the last two years. Maeve is Miss Popular. Lauren (St. Hubert '03) went to Medical Assistant school and volunteers for the Philadelphia Second Alarmers and recently took the police dispatcher test. Besides the union and the fire department I am also President of the International German-American Firefighters Association, board member of the Philadelphia Police and Fire Handicapped Assoc., board member of the Philadelphia Steuben Day Observance Committee, member of the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council, Philadelphia Regional EMS Council, Vereinigung Erzgebirge, Cannstatter Volksfest-Verein, and the Philadelphia Fire Department Historical Corporation. I was named the PFD Paramedic of the Year in 2003 and given the IAFF Local 22 community service award for raising $138,000 for the FDNY 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund. I did this in the name of a friend's son: FDNY FF Michael Roberts (Ladder 35). I also have several unit citations from the PFD for my work as a paramedic and many IAFF Media Awards for my PR work at Local 22. Today I live in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia with Sue and the kids. We work to make sure that our children are as happy, healthy and educated as we can.
