David's Story
What happened to me? Well, after the thrills, laughter and assorted hoopla of Vaca High, I found myself without anything resembling a plan for what to do next. I didn't see how I could afford college, and my folks sure as hell couldn't afford to send me, so when my pal Rick Hovey mentioned he was joining the Air Force Reserve to be a loadmaster on C-5s, it took me all of about five minutes to decide to tag along.
Twenty-four years later and I'm still in, which I imagine sounds a lot like dedication...although a lack of imagination is probably a lot closer to the truth. It's been interesting (the repetitive operations in the Great Kitty-Box of the World notwithstanding), and I eventually worked my way into a full-time civil service position with the Reserves in 1996. I'm now the C-17 Standardization and Evaluation Loadmaster for the 349th Operations Group at Travis (translation: a big frog in a small pond), doing my best to share what experience I've gained from close to 8,000 hours in the air.

cept on rare occasions when I've had WAY too much to drink -- and believe me, it ain't pretty. Writing is still one of my favorite things, though publishers universally recommend that I don't give up my day job just yet. I'm an avid cyclist, and while I can't find time to ride every day, I do manage to put in two to three thousand miles per year -- not too bad for a guy in his forties, I guess. I was married once (but I'm all better now), I have yet to be accused of children, and my idea of relaxation is slouching in a camp chair somewhere out in the woods, listening to the wind in the trees and watching the Fire Channel. I bought a house in Dixon in '97, where I still live with two dogs and a roomie who watches them when I'm off flying.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with the way things turned out. I've had my share of good times and not-so-good (hell, who hasn't?), I've managed to learn a thing or three along the way, and looking back, there isn't a great deal I would change even if I could.
I hope any of you reading this can say the same.
Cheers!
