David's Story
Here’s my story, so far: After growing up in the Ritenour school district, I split my high school years between St. Louis and Houston with a family move to Texas for my senior year. After high school and a couple of years in college, I worked in radio as an all-night disc jockey until I was called to duty in the Army. When I returned to civilian life, I worked in Houston radio as a talk show host and sportscaster. My Houston highlights include being at the tennis spectacle of the Billie Jean King-Bobby Riggs Battle of the Sexes, participating in a demolition derby in the Astrodome, and covering my first (of 11) Super Bowls, which was played in Rice University’s football stadium. k in 1974 and became sports director six years later. I was at the Miracle On Ice game in Lake Placid, the earthquake World Series in San Francisco, the 1991 Pan Am Games in Havana, Cuba, and the Olympic bombing in Atlanta. In 35 years at the AP, I covered every major sports event and currently hold the record for most Olympics covered by an AP reporter, with 17. I rounded out my working years as the head of sports communications at George Washington University. My wife is a 20-year veteran AP newscaster, editor, and consumer reporter. I am the father of three - two grown daughters (one who survived cancer at age 4) and a son who is the youngest of the three and is an honor student at the University of Kansas. I'm now living in the Heartland, writing a book (memoir) and doing hospital volunteer work.
