David's Story
Life
After highschool I joined the Oregon Army National Guard, ostensibly to be a legal specialist. My REAL job was to fill out other soldiers' life insurance cards. On the bright side I spent two weeks out of the year driving a truck into the desert to dig a hole. Then I sat in the hole, pointed my rifle out into the sage brush and waited for pretend bad guys. In six years, they never showed up. I enjoyed it, though, and met some truly good people.
Then on to college, where the government paid my rent (thanks, GI Bill!) and where, more importantly, I fell in love with my wife Joy. That alone was worth the price of tuition.
I (foolishly) spent four years getting licensed as a social studies teacher. Since Oregon is littered with social studies teachers, most of whom coach, I was pretty close to unemployable. I couldn't coach a hopscotch team.
So I took a job teaching alternative education. I didn't like it much, but I didn't want to fail at it either, so I stuck with it for three years. At the beginning of the fourth year it hit me: I really DID like it. ...Expand for more
I only have 30 students at any given time, and many of them return each year. I love getting to know them well, better than most teachers get to know their students. I have kids in their twenties who check back with me a couple of times per year, almost like I'm an uncle or something. So it turns out that I'm glad I got a social studies license and blundered into a profession that I have enjoyed for eight happy years and counting.
As a side note, my job has given me a great appreciation for my own parents, Gerald and Diana, and my brother Michael. I won the lottery of life in that regard.
So that's pretty much it. I have some hobbies, I get the occaisonal speeding ticket, and I would rather pave over my lawn than mow it. Otherwise I am well-blessed and happy.
If you are reading this you probably meant a great deal to me during my formative years, and I should have said so then. In those days I had a regretable tendency to keep compliments and gratitude to myself, so let me thank you now for your friendship. God bless you and yours.
Best wishes,
David
