David's Story

Life The NOW picture is taken with all of my eight grandchildren on Christmas Day, the birthday of the youngest, Jalisco Douglas Miles, who is standing in front of his older cousins. He just turned ten year-old The oldest granddaughter , Selina Miles at far right is now entering her sophomore year of college, and works for the Nez Perce Tribe in the Wildlife department. The next granddaughter, Celilo (named after Celilo Falls on the Columbia River where the Nez Perce Fished during various salmon runs -Spring, Summer, and Fall) who is sitting with a yellow shirt will be a junior in high school this year and is athletic, and does some modeling. The next granddaughter is Erin Ramsey, who is at the far left, who is going into her freshman year is also another basketball player as well as intelligent. The oldest grandson is Aaron Miles, Jr., (sitting to Erin"s left) who is going into his sophomore in high school and attends numerous basketball tournaments this summer and is an exceptional players as well. The next grandson is James Miles (sitting by his sister Celilo on the folding chair) will be going into his eighth grade. The next grandsons are Tommy Williams, III, who will also be an eighth grader, participates in basketball and track. The next grandson is Ivory Denzel Williams, sitting in the red folding chair, is an all-sports individual, and does excellent in basketball and baseball. The last grandson, Jalisco Douglas Miles, will not be born for another two more years on December 25, 2004, and is the apple of everybody's eye. He tends to pattern his life through sports after his older cousin Ivory Williams or Jinx as he is known around the area. All eight of my grandchildren are proud to be Nez Perce Indians, and they enjoy fishing for salmon during the Spring run (late May through early July). Iknow my father, Dave Miles, Sr., would be mighty proud of all of his grandchildren and would follow them in their sport's activities. I miss my father and although he never urged me to go on to get an education, his life spoke a lot to me while growing up. My father passed away in January 1994, shy of 90 years old by a few months. Although, we never communicated that much, his life spoke loudly too me as I know that very few people could have followed his footsteps. He was an older soldier when landing on Normandy Beach, 40 years old. I had an uncle who fought against the Japanese at age sixteen, and my ex-wife, her father was sixteen as well, both fought against the Imperialist Japanese. I doubt if you would see a sixteen year old fighting now, but during the Vietnam war, a sixteen year old Black from Chicago was killed over there and apparently made it over there by mistake! I hated war but did sign up for vietnam while coming back on the south Pacific cruise arriving back in December 1969. My reason for signing up for duty was to get into the drug scene. I had experienced drugs on the cruise into the south pacific. There were many who turned to drugs and some were the older sailors who dismissed the thought that you would go crazy. You might get addicted which eventually happened to me, but that was a risk I did take. If I had to line my life again, I probably would do the same but get into the Bay area a year earlier. However, I am thankful to the Lord who blessed me with exceptional grandchildren who all are intelligent and gifted with athletic skills. My life could end at anytime so if it does, then I can only hope that I am ready. I lost friends who went way before their time. I hope all will allow the Lord Jesus Christ work in your lives and lead you to a better Life for your families. God Bless The Nez Perces - chiefs, warriors, women, children and elders still wanted to live the ways of their ancestors - free and without constraints, moved along towards Canada, fought and won many of the battles aginst the US military. Against great odds they were finally stopped some 50 miles from freedom - the Canadian border! My great grandparents escaped into Canada and thus, my grandfather James Joseph Miles was born there sometimes after October 1877. Very few people understand us, or try to understand us. I am proud to have come from these great people, that of the Joseph Band in Oregon, and than a direct descendant of the old Chief Looking Glass Band in north-central Idaho. I am highly-educated but I would trade all of my education for that life of the past. I find it difficult to move in and around this western society that was foreign to my ancestors of the 19th century. The Than pic is of two of my grandchildren, Ivory on the left and Trey on the right who I live with. Once I have a pic taken of all of my eight grandchildren, I will replace with it. I look over my life and remember my grandfather, James Jospeh Miles, and try to understand him. However, he kept much of his life to himself. I now wonder how he thought life would have been for him and his parents if they would have been allowed to live in the beautiful Wallowa Mountains in Oregon. I know that he longed for that area, but it was never to happen. We as Indians or Nez Perce People, have feelings, emotions - good and bad, that made us who we are! We were not the savages, depicted in the old western movies where Indians were looked upon as being heathens, or soul-less! I read the many sayings of Chief Joseph, whose heart was saddened the way that his People had to live in exile in Indian country in Oklahoma. Jospeh was the powerful leader of the Wallow People of Nez Perce. There were other bands, as my mother was a direct descendant of Old Looking Glass who was Chief of this band of Nez Perce who lived in the upper reaches of the Clearwater country near Kooskia, Idaho. Young Chief Joseph appeared many times before Congress, asking for the return to his Father's land there in Oregon. He never saw this happen only to die a poor person, with a broken heart in 1904 at the age of 63 years old. Wow, in another four years, if the Lord's mercy is upon me, I will reach that age. My ancestors never benefitted by the onslaught of Western Civilization. People today, say come step into the 21st Century. Myself, I would rather have lived the ways of my ancestors, who lived a life that very few people ever lived. They were never without, and could travel to and fro. Yes, they had enemies, but were the predominant tribe in the Plateau area, and treated strangers with compassion as you would see if you read the accounts of Lewis and Clark expedition into our area in the early 1800s! I just turned 60 this past March 2009 and many people who I knew have passed on or died leaving me behind to live on a dying planet as well. One friend just died last week. My mother passed away on July 14, 2007 and she lived to the age of 91 years. My son, Aaron who is 39, discussed this concern and we both agreed that we do not want to live that long and burden our loved ones. As a young person, I had the opportunity to travel a lot during my high school years, by attending Sacajawe Jr. ...Expand for more
High (Lewiston, Idaho)and Kamiah High School for my freshman year, Oakley High School for my sophomore year, Kamiah and Lapwai High Schools for my junior year and finally attending Echo High School in Oregon for my senior year. All of this moving around did not allow for me to develop as a basketball player, and if i could live this phase of my life over, I surely would not have moved around so much. My wife of 25 years and I were fortunate to have four beautiful children: Aaron (39), Justine (37), Rebecca (36), and Delores (30). 8 grandchildren; Selina (17), Celilo (14), Aaron Miles, Jr. (13), Erin (12), Trey (11), James (10) and Ivory-D (10) and finally the Caboose - Jalisco - he was born on Christmas Day 2004 and is four years old today. Jalisco or Lisk as we call him has been a Joyous Blessing to all of us and is a reminder of the miracle power of the Lord Jesus Christ who brought me out of hard-core drug addiction before he was born! I plan on taking my youngest daughter, Delores and her son, Jalisco to meet his grandparents in Wichita, Kansas, and to meet his father, Melvin Wright. Lisk, as we call him, is one child who is highly intelligent, and when people see him for the first time, will stop and have to look at him. He draws that much attention, and I am thankful to the Lord Jesus Christ that he (Lisk) is from the Miles Family! He has been a wonderful miracle to all of us. Our marriage ended during the summer of 1994, and though was good, it had to end. Onward is all a person can do and I did make a good attempt of trying to destroy my life, and almost, But the Lord did intervene into my life with His Saving Grace! Director - Nez Perce Vocational Rehablitation Services (10 Years) Today, Living a Clean & Sober life after getting out of drug Rehab treatment (Intervention) on June 21, 2004 and taking sometime off of work for four months. I watch the program Intervention and really relate to most the people who become hard-core drug addicts who use way too much! Enjoying my profession now and really have an appreciation for life through my children and 8 Beautiful grandchildren and wouldn't trade my life for anything in this world now. Furthermore, Life has been good to me and I want to help other people, especially young people to live a life of overcoming the pitfalls of alcoholism and drug addiction and to appreciate life when you first wake up and breathe that air, realizing that you have another day to live. Aaron D Miles, oldest and only son, is the Natural Resources Manager for the Nez Perce Tribe. Justine E. Miles, oldest daughter, plans on starting her own business; Rebecca Miles, is on the Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee, hopes to work on a law degree or Ph.D. in the near future; and Delores Miles, youngest daughter, is busy with her son, Jalisco Douglas Wright Miles. Rebecca A. Miles became the first woman to be elected to hold the Chairman position for the Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee, the tribal council. She also is the youngest so as a father, I am mighty proud of her accomplishments. Justine E. Miles who is the proud mother of a daughter, Erin Ramsey who is another highly intelligent grandchild. Justine in her time was no slouch herself, and could work with computers at a highly efficient speed. And, Delores was highly intelligent in the areas of math and science. As a youngster, she could work with numbers, and had that intelligence to work with with computer games of twenty-five years ago, and also puttting puzzles together at the age of two and a half. Due to a sudden illness that took a lot of her quality of life, she is hoping one-day to utilize her brain in seeking an education. All of my grandchildren are really blessings to all of us, and hopefully, thru modeling will achieve beyond what their parents realized and what their Umpa (grandfather) achieved as well. Because of moving around too much, i look over my life at times with bitterness because I believe that I could have done so much better in education, and athletics. But, because my father was busy with trying to make the best for us, either thru, the ministry, teaching and coaching, I never got established in any one school. I had the opportunity to talk to a voice of the past, a graduate of the Class of 1968, who now lives in Scotland near Great Britain. It is good to hear of somebody who remembers you. This man lives a life serving the Lord Jesus Christ and that my friend is the best life you could ever live. I look over my life and see the ruins that I barely survived hitting boulders and such (instead of ordinary bumps in the road). And, much of this demise was the life that I chose to live, but many of my friends did not survive, they died way too young, and in accidents that they were easily avoidable and preventable. I have been Blessed to live this long, and there are times that I've questioned why was i allowed to do so. I have to deal with it as best as I can and live out the remainder of the steps that I have - to walk to help others, and be here for my children and grandchildren. I now can see that my days are numbered, and as a young person so many years ago, many of us took this area of our lives with "a grain of salt!" So my life can still be an enrichment, to myself, and to the people who are in need. I point to the Lord Jesus Christ and He is the one to be Praised and Glorified for what he has done for my life and my children and grandchildren. Military (1969-70) US Navy - Boot Camp - Great Lakes, Illinois, and eventually the US Rehoboth, an Oceanographic Survey ship from July 1969 to February 1970. Over the past few years, thru Classmates, i have had the blessing to meet others who i knew while a lot younger. Some have lived really interesting lives and fulfilling ones at that over the last 40-plus years. On the down-side, I know that there are many people who did not make it, and some died in really tragic and sad deaths. Life went by so fast and i believe many of us wished that we could have slowed the pace down. It is rather ironic to live to this age of reaching 60 years of age. I now must prepare to finish my life in a positive and benefical way to those loved ones who still need me around. I remember back when life was like a snail's pace when we moved to the Lewiston Orchards in late 1950s. I met a lot of good kids during this time and than there were kids who were not so kind! I am hoping for the best for my children and grandchildren, and that the Lord will keep His hand upon them all in these last days to live a positive life for others to see and benefit from.
