David's Story

After graduating from Strong Vincent, I attended Gannon College for 1 year as a mechanical engineering major and soon discovered that I was more interested in biological sciences. I transferred to Edinboro State College (now Edinboro University of Pennsylvania) the following year as a biology major, with the intention of teaching high school biology. After about 1 year at Edinboro I got interested in basic research and found myself doing microbial genetics research in the laboratory of my microbiology professor, Dr. Ellis Kline. I have been doing research ever since. It was at Edinboro that I met my first wife, in calculus class of all places. We later married and had two daughters, Lindsey (age 31, Ph.D. in molecular genetics from University of Chicago, now a postdoctoral fellow at St. Jude's) and Shannon (age 29, BS in English from Rhodes College, not sure what comes next). After graduating from Edinboro, I went to Clemson University and obtained a Ph.D. in microbiology. Clemson was wonderful, especially its rural setting, but my heart remains more fond of Edinboro. From Clemson I moved to Nashville, TN as a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt. I loved living in the south and decided that is where I wanted to s...Expand for more
tay. It was at Vanderbilt that I started doing research on HIV vaccines, which I continue to do to this day. I was at Vanderbilt for 10 years, during which time I was appointed to faculty rank, married, and Lindsey and Shannon were born. I also became an avid runner and triathlete in my spare time, making many good friends in the Nashville running community. By the end of 1992 my wife and I decided to part ways and I moved to Durham, NC, where I continue my work on HIV vaccines as a professor at Duke. I remarried (Nicole, a physician in Endocrinology at Duke). We have an 18 year-old daughter, Natalie, who is a swimmer and a senior at Durham Academy who is interested in environmental sciences. I have been as Duke since 1993 and plan to remain here until I retire. Duke is fabulous (go Blue Devils!). Also love the mountains and OBX! Started running and doing triathlons again at age 57 and now at age 65 I am still gong strong and age group competitive.. Both of my parents passed in 2017. I make it up to Erie occasionally to visit family and friends, and to attend Strong Vincent reunions, which are a blast! . That's it in a nutshell. Now let's hear from you!
