David's Story
I was a slow starter and took 6 years to get my undergrad degree. I graduated with a BS in Geology from Oregon State University. I then joined the Peace Corps and spent three plus years in Malaysia from late '69 to early '73. The first year I taught high school physics then switched to work in the Malaysian Geologic Survey where I investigated tin deposits in the Straits of Malacca. A great eye-opening experience. Then I went back to school in Oceanography where I took my time again. After 8 years I popped out with a PhD in Geological Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island.
Instead of taking the academic route, I went into industry. For the last 40 years I have been a geophysicist first for Amoco Exploration then for the software firm Sierra Geophysics, then moved into consulting. In 2009 I developed a 1-week geophysics class for a company called PetroSkills. For 10 years I travel about 4 or 5 times a year to different countries to teach the class - great travel opportunities! Now I'm retired.

d to love travel in the Peace Corps and on many oceanographic cruises. I meet my wife in Grad School. She too loves to travel, and we planned our honeymoon to coincide with an Oceanographic cruise from San Diego to Peru. After working 25 days on the cruise, we got to see Machu Picchu. After living in New Orleans and Singapore, we have ended up here in Seattle for 25 years. We love to travel but our wanderlust has lately slowed. For the last year we rented a place on the central Oregon Coast and enjoyed the pounding surf, walking the beach, and the beautiful sunsets. I volunteer at the local aquarium and give geology talks at the Cape Perpetua Visitors Center. I still enjoy photography and marvel at the way digital photography has changed the way we perceive the world.
We have a daughter who is doing a postdoc in environmental engineering in Wisconsin. We are enjoying being grandparents to a 3-year-old grandson that we dote on.
