David's Story

Life... People can change, thank goodness! I was wilder than I or anybody who cared about me could live with, N headed south until I got clean at 23. I haven't used in the 25 years since. Some of my crew didn't pull out of that dive! My Dad, bless his heart, was my biggest inspiration to live differently than he did. After High School I went to Shelbyville Vo Tech, graduated N worked briefly as a draftsman. Jobs were scarce during the recession of the mid 80's so I took the work I could find. I started working at Koala Center located in the old King Hospital waiting for a "real job" then took a job offer from Cumberland Heights in Nashville at a start up Adolescent Program in '85. A couple promotions later, N I was making as much as a Draftsman, so it became a career. I worked a 2nd job at Nashville Sailing Center on Percy Priest for a few years sailing. Was an avid hiker in my 20's, had a brush with hypothermia on a 70 Mi. solo hike in the Smokes in '87, then almost died of hypothermic shock on another solo hike during a hike AZ (some people never learn) in '90 . I turned on 2 the Art's N started sculpting in my late 20's. I married a girl (5 years my senior) from Tullahoma I met in Nashville in 1990. I got a job offer to work at a Hospital with a national reputation N a few more thousand bucks in Tucson, N we moved 2 Tucson AZ in '91. I had cancer in '92, surgery, bit the thermonuclear bullet, N have been in full remission since. We didn't have the children I wanted in my 1st marriage so I did the next best thing, found a family that adopted me. I held my God Son Bryce when he was 2 Hrs old, he was born on my birthday. I watched his sister Rachael grow into the sweetest adolescent. I hung out with them every week for a kid fix till our lives diverged. We got snared remodeling a "charming old AZ bungalow" gone money-pit. My wife had some devestating chronic medical problems, we persevered thru thick N thin for 15 years till the difference in our values divided us. We tossed everything we'd worked for, including a couple houses we had, to cover her medical debt N avert bankruptcy. We ended our marriage like friends in 06. I remarried a fantastic girl with alot of life left in her, N spent 2 weeks driving through Spain N Portugal for our honeymoon. I...Expand for more
left my job of 17 yrs in Tucson, N took a new job in Nor Cal Nov of 08; I'm in heaven here, Livin La Vida Loca! I dig nostalgia, history, architechture, N have had a longstanding interest in the American Farm Experience. I even had a couple early John Deere 12A combines I had 2 let loose of when my old life came crashing down around me. I like cars; drive a G35, N like 2 wrench alittle. I trick on a '93 Wrangler I bought new / turned hobby. I'm trying 2 resurrect a 55 F100 into a vintage rod / custom. I hit the car shows N dream. I've got a couple nice Mountain Bikes. I love 2 drive N I've seen my share of the U.S. I got out in the water with the big boats for the Americas Cup Races '92 and '95, off the coast of San Diego. Looking at a sailboat as a next descretionary excess. I dig music from early, traditional, blues, classic jazz, classic rock, N listen to the college rock station. I hit the movies, read alittle N love old books. You're likely to find me with my nose in the shelves of an old book store. I did my last solo hike in the Smokes a couple years ago. It rained and rained, I couldn't get dry, N ended the hike water logged. I'm just not into the tired and dirty as the years go by. I've decided B&B's is the only way to travel. I work out routinely, whether I want to or not, but I couldn't preserve that 18 year old body. I can't believe I'm a 47 year ole duffer; I still feel 30. I miss my TN, "You can take the boy out of the south, but you can't take the south out of the boy". I dream of east TN / the Smokes, N a little Farm in the verdant pastoral mid-south... but, the west coast was callin my name! I'm another casuality of the Fat Cats that bilked the financial system to float CEO's trips to Antigua, but I go to bed every nite with a clear conscience! The Man cant keep a brother with ballz from bouncing! :-) I'm proof, it's never 2 late 2 re-invent urself, N my last 180 at 45 gave me a chance 2 live again... life's awesome! I try not to take me 2 seriously, N entertain myself with the fun du jour. To all who find me on Classmates in the online community of the world wide web, ain't it great... the world at you're fingertips, where you can take a trip and never leave the farm! See ya at the next reunion? Have fun or have fun tryin! David
