David's Story

Life My life in 4000 words or less. Following High School I went to college at Northland College in Ashland Wisconsin. Northland was a small school around 600 students. It is now ranked in the top 25 liberal arts schools, US News and World Report. I enjoyed college VERY much and majored in Chemistry. After spending 4 years in the far north of Wisconsin I found it difficult to return to Ohio and took a summer job at Michigan Technological University (MTU) in 1983. I am still working at MTU and enjoy it. While here at MTU I have started two businesses; one a domestic engineering firm consulting on water quality issues related to clean up with adsorbents and advanced oxidation, the other is an internation business focused on China where our Sister company now has three branch offices. In this business we are basically manufacturer representatives for scientific equipment, heavily into drinking water applications. I have generated two patents over the years. One dealing with regeneration of adsorbents using advanced oxidation and the other a method and apparatus for destroying organic compounds in fluid. Along with the patents I have generated an extensive list of publications and worked on some fairly high profile projects such as the drinking water treatment system for the Space Station. Regarding fun times I have a wife, Cindy, who I met after I bought a house behind her mother's and she came to work for me at MTU as her degree is in Biology. In the years before children we were active in things like sled dogs. After having 4 children; Sam, Alex, Kately, and Daniel we moved from our country home into town, Laurium. We kept our country home as the location is so great with acreage and since i...Expand for more
t is only about 5 minutes away think of it as our camp. Our house in Laurium is very nice, over 5000 square feet, and everyone has their own bedroom. I even have a place for my own lab and office. The kids have a great game room on the third floor with pool table, play station, etc. We all enjoy our sauna which is a ritual in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. My sons play hockey and are good. Sam the oldes, now a sophmore in high school plays in Midget hockey which spans from 15 to 18 year olds. His team nearly own the State Championship this year. Alex is on a Batam A team with is a select travel team and Daniel is mites, the lowest level of hockey age wise. I guess I have a lot of hockey in my future yet. Katelyn stopped playing hockey a number of years ago and started taking horse back riding lessons. Her dream now is to make enough money to lease a horse. She has been working on inviting bioluminescent bubbles such that the kids bubble toy solution can be used and seen at night and is considering the use for decorative yard lighting, night lights, etc. This was the subject of her science fair this but has been working on it for over a year now. Her dream is to be a writer but I think she likes science without knowing it. Sam plans to go to MTU to become a mechanical engineer. Personally I plan to retire from MTU in about 15 years after I have gotten the kids through college but if the business provide enough I could leave MTU as early as 2008. If any of you get up to the UP and want to stop by let me know. Well I guess I was able to stay within the 4000 characters with 644 left. School I guess Major Wagner inspired me the most. If I could do it all over again - no way.
