David's Story
Life
First off, I didn't go to Greenfield, (Dated a Green Wave girl, and married another though) Frontier, Franklin Tech or Pioneer, so if you click here thinking I'm someone you may remember from one of those schools...Well...It wasn't me. I joined those others because as an employee of the Umass Grounds Dept, I find lots of things like rings, books, and personal items with owner's names. Sometimes the rightful owners are easy to find, and sometimes they're not. Oddly enough, I've picked up a slew of class rings over the years, and I've had a 90% success rate of giving them back to those same folks who lost them. It helps if there's initials engraved, ya know? Anyway...
I live a boring, mediocre, and lackluster life...But after the trials and tribulations of parenthood, I wouldn't have it any other way,
School
Wow, where to start...Biggest crush? I sure made enough of a fool out of myself, so I'm sure she knows who she is. Teacher who inspired me the most? No names, but he told me "Your not going to get far in life with your attitude. You have to put SOMETHING in to get something out of it." Unfortunately, it took a while for it to sink in....
One of the strangest memories I have of highschool is a "smoking pass", and in fact I still have it buried away somewhere. I told my daughter's friends a while back that we had a designated smoking area and they were in shock. I also remember skipping school in the morning to go deer or squirrel hunting with a group of guys who'd already graduated, and then showing up in the student parking lot around 9:30 or so, cleaning my shotgun in the back seat and then going to class. Wouldn't wanna do THAT now.
There were a few road trips to Vermont with the usual crowd, but on one in particular we ended getting a flat tire on the way back to Montague from Vernon. As luck would have it, someone else in the senior class happened to be...Expand for more
doing the same thing and a couple of us were able to hitch a ride back to town, get a flat bed, pick the rest of us up and the disabled vehicle...And I got back to the school just in time to catch the bus home. I think my sister ratted on me though, because I ended up getting grounded. Gosh! And she wonders why we don't talk!
College
I've been working at UMass for over thirty seven years and there's a lot of stories. World Series riots, Halloween riots, Southwest Dorm festivities, wild frat parties...but I was only there to clean up the mess...
Hobbies
In High School I had a small group of friends who played guitar, bass, and drums, so it was a natural thing to get a band or two together. About the only thing that was accomplished was causing my parents to go prematurely grey. Later on my network of musician type friends grew, a few more bands were formed and reformed, and reformed again, and for about 15 years I wasn't home much on the weekends. Didn't sit well with a wife and two small kids. After a separation of over a year, I grew up...Again...Retired from the local music scene, and became a full time husband and father.
A "few" more years go by, the kids are almost grown and have their own lives for the most part, parents and in-laws aren't needing us to take care of them anymore, and my wife is getting tired of my gun collecting. I meet up with the same bandmates (minus one) that I was playing with at our first Class of '81 Reunion, and things began to snowball. Much to my surprise, my wife who once hated the idea of being married to a bar band musician, now seems to like the idea, and gives me the OK to jump in and do it all over again. My son, who also plays in a local teen band, helps me lug my equipment, and my wife makes sure I stay hydrated while playing...She also gets the cash at the end of the night. Sort of a double edged thing, but what the heck.
