Master Chief David B. Vitulski was born in Chicago, Illinois and enlisted in the United States Navy on 14 February 1974, in Tucson, Arizona. Following recruit training graduation, from Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, he reported to USS SACRAMENTO (AOE 1) in June 1974. It was during this tour he became a designated Yeoman and subsequently selected for advancement to Third and Second Class Petty Officer.
In 1978, after completing three overseas deployments to the Far East, Indian Ocean, and Middle East, Master Chief Vitulski transferred to the staff of Headquarters European Command as a message processor and later as one of the three Alternate Top Secret Control Officers for the headquarters staff. Departing HQEUCOM in January 1980, he was assigned to the Command, Control, Communications Directorate, Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (OJCS) where he served in the directorate’s administration office and within four months of reporting was hand-picked to serve as the Administrative Assistant for Lieutenant General Hilman Dickinson, USA and Major General Patrick Halloran, USAF. During his tour in OJCS, he was advanced to First Class Petty Officer and later selected to attend YN “C” School (Flag Writer School) in Meridian, Mississippi. After graduation Master Chief Vitulski served as Flag Writer for Vice Admiral Kent J. Carroll, Commander, Military Sealift Command.
In July 1983, he was ordered to Carrier Group SEVEN (CARGRU 7), as Flag Writer for Rear Admiral Stanley R. Arthur. While in CARGRU 7 he completed his fourth overseas deployment embarked in USS RANGER (CV 61), that included setting the new at sea record for a fossil-fueled carrier of 122 days. In 1984 he was selected for advancement to Chief Petty Officer. Transferring to Guam in 1985, he was ordered as Flag Writer for Rear Admiral Chauncy F. leet at NAS Whidbey Island. In 1987, while assigned to the Wing, he was selected for advancement to Senior Chief Petty Officer. In June 1990, Master Chief Vitulski reported to the staff of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Logistics, Vice Admiral Stanley R. Arthur, and transferred with him in October 1990 when the Admiral assumed the duties of Commander, SEVENTH Fleet and Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command embarked in USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19) during Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM. Returning to shore duty from SEVENTH Fleet in June 1992, Master Chief Vitulski continued serving as Admiral Arthur’s Flag Writer in the Office of the Vice Chief of Naval Operations. Master Chief Vitulski attended the Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island in January 1993. In 1994, he was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer.
Master Chief Vitulski reported for his first Command Master Chief (CMC) assignment to Fighter Squadron 102, the "Fighting DIAMONDBACKS," in September 1994. During this tour he completed his sixth and seventh overseas deployments while embarked in USS AMERICA (CV 66) and USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73). Following this tour, he served as CMC of the GRIM REAPERS of Fighter Squadron 101, from June 1998 to April 2000. Master Chief Vitulski assumed his duties as CMC, Carrier Air Wing ONE in April 2000 and from March 2001 until March 2002 he was assigned additional duty as THEODORE ROOSEVELT Battle Group Command Master Chief completing an arduous overseas combat deployment, that included 159 days at sea, while executing Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. From May 2003 to June 2004, Master Chief Vitulski served as Command Master Chief, Naval Reserve Center, Tampa. Master Chief Vitulski retired from the U.S. Navy, 1 June 2004 after completing more than 30 years of honorable and faithful service.
Master Chief Vitulski's awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with Three Gold Stars), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Three Gold Stars), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with Two Gold Stars), and numerous unit, service, and campaign ribbons and medals.
Master Chief Vitulski and his wife, Philomena, make their home in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
