David's Story
So, under my name/photo in the yearbook it says "Business was his aversion, pleasure was his business." I never found out who selected that quote, but at the time it was pretty much dead-on. But . . . things change.
Growing up in the Midwest instilled in me important core values. But I was whisked out of the Midwest early enough in life to adopt a worldly perspective. My varied interests, culturally rich family life, and especially my entrepreneurship, have taken me far and wide. My formal training is as a classical musician (oboist), but I spent my career in high technology, and building businesses in venture capital. Although I have educational credentials (Stanford Graduate School of Business), I prefer to think of myself as a student of life and ¿on the job¿ training. Close friends have described me as a "self made man." Guess that's better than them saying I'm a self made woman.
Today, my calling card represents me as an "Artisan, Raconteur et Bon Vivant" - which is one way of saying I retired early (45) and have returned to many of my passionate interests and am now single again. I pursue several interests actively, including interpretative portrait photography, fine woodworking, writing and story telling, cooking, helping young entrepreneurs start and run their companies, teaching wine appreciation, fathering two teen girls (one in college and one junior in high school), and maintaining friendships all over the world. I have lived in many places in the US, traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Pacific Rim, sailed in a variety fun places and circumnavigated the world aboard s...Expand for more
hip. Building and remodeling homes has been a constant pursuit throughout my life and I have acted as Designer/Architect, General Contractor, and cabinet builder, millwork and finish carpentry tradesman on many projects.
The performing arts remain a key interest for me - ballet, symphony, opera and theater. Attending independently produced cinema and discussing same with friends is one of my true passions. I'm an animal lover, and have been labeled a hopeless romantic many times. As an avid chef and oenophile, I entertain frequently in my home in San Francisco and relish opportunities to do the same in the company of close friends around the globe.
I especially enjoy traveling - going to places that offer learning opportunities or enriching and immersive cultural experiences. Traveling for me is a way to experience the journey of life. I'm equally drawn to Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Prague for their cultural aspects, or the Caribbean, Greece, Turkey, and South Pacific as sailboat skipper. My travels have afforded me many teaching and learning opportunities in such diverse areas as photography, home building, wine appreciation, cooking, art history, architecture and entrepreneurship. The highlight of my traveling experiences thus far came in 2008 when I signed on as a lifelong learner on the floating college Semester at Sea (affiliate of University of Virginia) and spent four months with 700 college students circling the globe aboard ship, taking college classes, experiencing the culture of places as diverse as Salvador, Namibia, India, Vietnam as well as vastly expanding my circle of friends.
