David's Story
Let's see, what have I been doing for the last 40 years? This and that ... Bill Gross and I both went to CalPoly, Pomona and graduated with degrees in Electrical Engineering. However, in the middle of that I dropped out for a couple of years and in the summer of 1971 I camped across the US and Canada with Bruce Bovie. After graduation I went to work for Hewlett-Packard in San Diego, transferring to Colorado in 1979. In 1981 I dropped out for a while again and lived in a van as I drove, camped, and biked across the country from Alaska to Florida, Vermont to San Diego. After that I settled in Boulder, Colorado, worked as a computer software consultant to various Internet startup companies, got married, had two daughters...Expand for more
, eventually got divorced, and helped raise my girls. In 1999 I reconnected with Brad Devine and he took me sailing to Catalina and kindled a love for sailing in me. In 2003 I dropped out again (see a trend?) for a while and went sailing across the South Pacific on a square-rigged tall ship. Now (2009) I live in Alameda, an island in San Francisco bay. I am semi-retired and frequently sail on the bay. My first daughter, Diana, graduated from UC Berkeley in 2007 and still lives near there where I see her often. My younger daughter, Katy, just graduated from UC Berkeley in 2009 and is currently a Nursing/Midwife student at Columbia Nursing school in NYC. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with the next 40 years ...
