David's Story

My life would make an interesting movie script. Dan Akroyd stars as Dave. The story is a combination of "Mission Impossible", "Christmas Vacation", "Forrest Gump", and "Casablanca". In the beginning, things are sad. Dave is a social outcast who experiences a series of misfortunes. As the story progresses from high school to college to work, Dave's bad luck is replaced by good luck. Although his life is still a series of blunders, his incredibly good luck makes him appear to be a genius. As the illusion builds over the years, the perception slowly becomes the reality. Impossible problems and bizarre mysteries get solved; the story gets a happy ending. In my entire life, I have only one regret. I used to have two, but now I'm down to one. There was a girl who lived directly across the street from me. She moved in when I was in (maybe) 9th grade. I think she was in 7th grade at the time. The numbers might be a bit off, but she was a year or two behind me. I am absolutely certain that she wanted me to ask her out. I liked her immensely, but there was a problem. She was unaware (initially), but I thought my status as a social outcast was not going to impress her very much. After all, I was a geek long before it was fashionable. There were some kids with "adolescent development issues" who gave me a great deal of grief. For the most part, I did a good job of ignoring them. However, if I started dating this girl, they would certainly give her grief as well. At the very least, they would waste no time in convincing her that she shoul...Expand for more
d date someone else. I expected a high level of harassment, so I directed my attention elsewhere. I ignored her, and she eventually gave up. I managed to reinvent my social life. I worked in Farmington, and later in Meriden. This opened up a whole new world. No matter how much grief I experienced in school, nothing could touch my life in a meaningful way. At the time, I congratulated myself for outwitting the social system. Looking back, I should have stood my ground and dated the girl across the street. I'm sorry. I was soooooooooooo stupid! I learned a lesson, and I tell it to everyone who will listen. "Never let the bad guys win by default." Sometimes the bad guys are not well-organized. They make mistakes; sometimes they get lazy. They are far from invincible. If only I knew then what I know now! If I were single, it would take me about 5 minutes to locate her. Armed with knowledge I always wished I had, technology that didn't exist at the time, and a budget that results from 20 years of good luck, I would "sweep her off her feet". The people who knew me in high school would read this and have a hard time visualizing Dave Cavanaugh pulling it off. The people who know me now would be checking the TV listings to see if this is going to be on the Hallmark Channel. So many ideas drift through my head, it's tough to pick out the ones I should actually use. When you are limited by your own imagination or money, your behavior stays tends to stay within existing social norms. But what happens if there are NO limits?
