David's Story

Life Anyone that knew me in school knows I'm not much for writing. This is all you get folks. <grin> Workplace Immediately after graduation I had to go to Ft. Knox, Ky. to complete training as a armor crewman(that's tanks for the uninitiated). Once I returned from training I went to work for just over a year as an installer for a cable company. I didn't care much for that line of work, especially during the summer. I then bounced around working as a driver/wharehouse worker for nearly three years. Knowing that I had no future doing such work I took a large pay cut and went to work in the retail grocery business. I stayed in grocery for eight years working my way through the ranks on up to store level management. Along the way I found I didn't like to babysit adults who should have been able/willing to work without constant supervision. I also didn't care for missing nearly every week...Expand for more
end and holiday with my family. I left the grocery business to work as a professional driver for nearly 5 years. Three of those years were spent driving for a towncar company which was interesting mainly due to the people/celebrities I had the opportunity to meet. This line of work required very long hours and offered no benefits whatsoever so I had to find something with medical benefits when my wife became disabled. This led to my working as a delivery truck driver for two years. Benefit cuts a year after I began driving truck led to my applying for a position with the local Water Bureau. Eight months of jumping through all the hoops required to land the position brought me to where I am currently, working for The City That(sort of)Works. I plan on staying with the City of Portland in one capacity or another until retirement so, hopefully, this won't need to be updated for a long time.
