David's Story

Life Hi, RHS 1969 Alums! I am a professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. Married for 33 years to Martha Salter, from Bay City, whom I met as a junior at UT. Three sons: Christopher (20), Mark (18), and Rob, who, I am very sad to say, died in Lubbock in July 2006 at age 24. I hope to renew acquaintances with many of you. My university bio follows. David M. Cordell, PhD, CFA, CFP®, CLU, is Director of Finance Programs at the University of Texas at Dallas. He specializes in the fields of investments, financial planning, and retirement planning. Dr. Cordell holds a bachelor's degree, an MBA, and a PhD in financial management and investments, all from The University of Texas at Austin. He has earned three professional designations and certifications: Chartered Financial Analyst, Certified Financial Planner® certification, and Chartered Life Underwriter. For eleven years prior to joining the UT Dallas faculty, Dr. Cordell was a professor at Texas Tech University, The American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. He had previously maintained a financial planning practice in Houston, Texas, after working as a pension sales manager for Aetna Life Insurance and Annuity Company. Prior to his industry experience, Cordell served as a professor at Louisiana State University and the University of Houston, teaching courses in investments and financial management. Dr. Cordell's consulting experience has included financial planning, corporate finance, business valuation, and bank management. He has worked with both large and small corporations as well as government at the federal and state levels. , and managers. Author of numerous articles in finance, banking, and investments, Dr. Cordell is a frequent speaker on financial planning topics. He is author, editor, or contributing author of the following books: Fundamentals of Investments for Financial Planning, Fundamentals of Financial Planning, Readings in Financial Planning, Financial Decision Making at Retirement, Financial Planning: The New Century, The Financial Services Professional's Guide to the State of the Art, Financial Planning Applications, Tax Companion 1995 and Solutions Handbook for Personal Financial Planning. Dr. Cordell has been has been especially active in industry affairs, recently serving as chair of the CFP Board of Examiners. He previously served on the Pass Score and Item Writing committees for the Board. Earlier he served on the boards of the Philadelphia Area Chapter of the International Association for Financial Planning and the Houston Society of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners. He is currently a member of the Financial Planning Association and the CFA Institute, for which he grades Chartered Financial Analyst examinations. Dr. Cordell also has been Financial Counseling Track Adviser for the national conference of the American Society of CLU & ChFC (now the Society of Financial Service Professionals). Dr. Cordell's commitment to the community has been extensive. In addition to coaching youth baseball, he has been a city councilman, community association president, YMCA board member, Rotary Club board member, credit union board member, and senior warden of his church. School I had a crush on every girl I dated (Debbie Moses longest). Long-time crush on Melinda Nelson.
