David's Story

We have 2 daughters Skye-a Veterinarian and Medical Director of her hospital and Leah with a Phd in psychology.. Leah has her own company and works as an expert witness at trials. After SAHS I attended Northrop Institute of Tech. in Inglewood CA. I graduated with a BS in Aerospace eng. Joined the Navy to became a pilot. Met my future wife Marilyn who is from southern Mississippi ( 50 miles north of New Orleans) while I was training in Pensacola FL (think of the movie "Officer & Gentlemen" ) After I got my wings I worked as an engineer on the F-14 when it was just starting up. Then flew mostly P-3's with 2 six month winter deployments to Iceland. Spent 7 yrs active and 15 yrs in the reserves. Retired as a Commander. When I left active duty in 1975 I enrolled at San Jose State U. on the GI bill and graduated in 1977 with a MS in Civil Eng. specializing in water quality. e first 13 years then transfered to New York for my last 7 years. I commuted to work from Lynchburg during my whole time with AA. I flew many famous movie stars, politicians, and sports celebrities. It was the greatest job in the world when I started but I was glad and relieved to retire. I was required by federial law to do so, on Sept. 10, 2006 my 60th birthday. At that time American was the only so-called legacy airline to not have gone bankrupt and still had it's retirement plans intact. I took a lump sum at retirement and don't have to sweat AA staying in busness. I knew 5 people who were on the 757 that went into the Pentagon on 9/11 and probably had worked with several of the flight attendants on the AA 767 that went into the World Trade Center. I still see their faces every Sept. 11TH. I flew President Ford out of NY when he first visited the World Trade Center site after 9/11. Probably the pinnacle moment in my aviation career.
On Dec. 12, 2023 Marilyn and I moved into Westminster Canterbury, a top shelf retirement community in Lynchburg and we are enjoying our golden years here.
May God bless all my SAHS Classmates.
