David's Story

Here is my best guess about what people, if they are interested at all, would like to know about my last fifty years: HISTORY: In 1965 I married Mary Atkins, Sacramento High School 1958. UC Davis 1962. We have four children, but only two grandchildren: Karen, 39, married 1992, two children, lives in Bethesda MD. Her children are 12 and 8. Martin, 37, married 2008, no children, lives in San Francisco. Susan, 30, married 2008, no children, lives in Washington DC. Ellen, 28, single, no children, lives in Ogden UT. I barbered full time until 1963. I was a loan officer in a savings and loan until the 1966 disintermediation put savings and loans temporarily out of the lending business. So after a few months trying to sell real estate, I started college full time in the spring of 1967. I stopped with a BS (Business) at UC Berkeley in 1969. Mary taught elementary school for three years, quitting to have our first child in 1969. She went back to teaching in 1987, and stayed with it until 2008. I switched from banking to bank examining in 1973. After 24 years, I retired from the US Treasury¿s Office of the Comptroller of the Currency at the end of 1996. Since then I have been a contractor, providing internal control advice and credit examination for bank service providers, banks, and government agencies. ough to recognize a keeper when I met Mary. She has skills, attitudes and strengths that seem uniquely capable of making my life as complete as it has been. Of course I also give myself credit for being smart enough to seduce her into marriage, and staying focussed enough to keep her interested for our forty-four years so far. Family wise, I am proud of my children. Karen stayed at home raising kids for twelve years, and recently went back to work part time as a software project manager for a lobbying group. Martin is a software architect working somewhere south of San Francisco -- maybe Silicon Valley. Susan is a High School Teacher in Prince Georges County Maryland. Ellen is overcoming some mental health problems while attending Weber State University in Ogden Utah. I consider myself self-educated. But I also got a degree at Berkeley. In the old days, Berkeley gave honors for a 3.0 average, and I got a 3.01 cumulative by breaking the 3.0 mark for the first time with a 3.4 in my final semester. The highlight of my professional career is the thirteen weeks I spent in Moldova, in 2001. I went there to teach some employees of the National Bank of Moldova to be better examiners and regulators of information technology risks. It was maybe better for me than for them. They already knew a lot about IT risks. And l learned from them how fear of political risk can trump any lessons we may teach while assuming a free society.
