David's Story
After graduating WHS, I went to Cornell University, where I majored in hospitality management. One of my major activities at Cornell was working at the college radio station, WVBR. During college I also spent two summers in Northern Michigan working at a resort. After college, I spent 10 years in hospitality management, bouncing from Westchester County, NY to Chicago, North Carolina, Fairfax, VA, before finding myself back in NJ. I then changed fields, getting a Masters in Social Work from Rutgers, and began a career in advocacy for employment of people with significant disabilities in 1991. and non-profits across the United States as well as internationally. I am currently based at the Institute for Community Inclusion at UMass Boston, which I have been with for a total of 25 years. My wife Karen and I have been married since 1989, and we have 3 children: Patrick, Charlotte, and Margaret. Patrick is journalist and lives with his wife Jaclyn in the Boston area, Charlotte does victim's rights work in Massachusetts, and is engaged to her fiancé Nick (marriage date: January 2025). Our youngest, Margaret, is a pharmacy tech and currently lives with us. In my non-work time, I serve on a number of non-profit boards, and for fun I like to bike, sail, do a bit of political advocacy, and most importantly spend time with my family.
