David Howell:

CLASS OF 1960
Breckenridge, TX

David's Story

Graduated from ACC in 65 with a BS in Chemistry. Married Drusilla Cook on 7-4-64 and still married to same. Wear a pair of hearing aids which help. Moved to Lake Jackson, TX the end of May of 65 and started working for Dow Chemical at Freeport. Never did adjust to the bugs, rust, mold, and mildew. One daughter, Drusilla Melinda, married Brent Isom of Idalou, TX. Twin granddaughters 5 going on 15. They live at Graham, TX where he is the game warden. Was retired in July of 01 when Dow bought out Union Carbide. Moved to Mineral Well on November 1 same year. Started subbing in Mineral Wells ISD in 02 to have something to do. Wound up as full time sub in world geography for 23 weeks. That got me interested in possibility of teaching. Rolled my ole BS degree into a teaching certerficate in 04/05 teaching HS sciences at Perrin (1A rural 16 miles north of Mineral Wells). Kids have definately changed since we were in school and sadly not for the better. One of my biggest regrets is that Miss. Frasier is not around for me to tell her that it took 40 years for me to become a teacher as she told me to do in the early 60s. I value the BHS days greatly. I have 100 pages of rememberences (as I remember them) that I started writing while still in high school. We were fortunate for the times and friends we had then. It is really funny how some of the stunts I/we pulled then have rolled around to me as a teacher. However, I have never (so far) left a class without a sub as happened to the physics class in 59/60. My focus for as long as possible is to continue teaching in order to make the future the best possilbe for the kids in my classes. A lot of them daily have to deal with things we would have never imagined growing up. I would love to hear from any of my school mates. We had good times together and will never for get you. ...Expand for more
I have recently started using the aerial portion of Map Quest to spot old locations of camping/hunting trips, etc.. Gets real interesting shaking up the ole memory and figuring out all the changes in the last 50 years especially the tree growth. Retired from teaching May 27. Too many rowdy kids, not enough of the good ones to keep you going (as per Miss Frasier), too many regulations from TEA, and wanted my evenings and weekends back. I am adjusting/setting up a non-school routine after 7 years. Finally got my shop cleaned out to work on projects such as an 18 inch by 8 foot computer desk top. Pulled out various plastic models and trying to figure out just what I was doing with them 25 years ago, however I do have time for them. Now that my eyes are changing and my hands are not as steady as they used to be I am drilling holes the size of small pins and having a ball. Have some history projects started and would like to get back to the personal writing--fun stuff especially when it is too hot to be outside. Plan to attend more reunions to check up on the other classes. We had out 50th last fall and it was the best ever. Just finished transcribing 9 years of journal entries that relate to the education experience. Fough drafe is 245 pages and I have already started to edit. Retirement has given me time to think on the past as well as current education issues and I feel ready to explode. Anyone that has not been in a classroom in the last 5 years have no idea what the teachers and kids are going through and it is just getting worse. I am going to see what I can do to enlighten everyone concerning those issues. I am also just getting started in mentoring students especially those with the greatest difficulties. Will quit for now so I don't start preaching. If you have made it this far I would love to hear from everyone.
