David's Story
Life
Now living in Pamplona, Spain after eleven years in Munich, Germany. Life has been a wonderful adventure so far. My work as an executive coach and leadership development consultant takes me all over Europe and sometimes to N. America. Family in California (Marin and Berkeley) still has me visiting "home" for some months during the year.
After graduating UC Berkeley I got my first job far away in San Francisco working for a French multinational. A few years of that and I was ready for a move - and headed for the Big Apple. Lived in NYC for 11 years, working at Citibank, getting a Masters at Columbia U. SIPA, making some short movies, selling ice cream on the street in hot summer months, doing fluxus art in Soho, practicing Buddhism, getting married, getting unmarried, running in Central Park and doing the NY Marathon twice, working on Wall Street, climbing in the "Gunks," life in NYC is a constant buzz of energy...
In 1992 I moved to Germany. Started earning money teaching rollerblading in English. Some of the consultants taking my classes recommended me into their networks and my first "real" job was working as a junior headhunter in an exec search firm. That led to a job at one of the clients, a German subsidiary of a Canadian multinational. The Canadians and the Germans didn't see eye to eye and my job was to figure out why. As my German improved I began to see more deepl...Expand for more
y into the issues of working with differences. After many trials and tribulations I found my way into a career called intercultural communications consulting. Siemens discovered me doing that and invited me to join their training area with a focus on preparing German executives to work with Americans and vice versa. I survived 3 1/2 years in that very NOT North American way of working, and gained many more insights into how to work internationally. Upon leaving Siemens my client base spread out in Europe and my ability to work in several languages helped to find work with international, multicultural teams.
In 2001 Ana and I were married and had the wonderful good fortune that a little boy joined us in May of 2002. His name is Marc - and his appearance pushed us over the top with the decision to leave Germany and move to Spain so that Marc (and we!) could be closer to grandparents. We live about ten minutes' drive from the "abuelos" and it's just great. Slowly but surely we've gotten our feet on the ground here. Our house is fabulous (we imported it from Portland, Oregon! That's another remarkable story!!), the climate and lifestyle are great for our health, and the sunshine in Spain is superb! We still spend about two months a year with my family in the Bay Area so that Marc can grow up bilingual/bicultural, and so that we can stay in touch with the innovative, vibrant CA spirit.
