David's Story

After high school, I continued my education at Lewis College and continued to sing under Enoch Estep's direction. In 1973, I received my Mathematics (BA) degree and prepared to go to the Air Force Officer Training School. I received my commission in Dec 73 and moved on to Advanced Pilot Training. In April 1975, I was awarded my US Air Force Pilot wings. Over the next 22 years, I flew missions all over the world and lived in some interesting locations -- from North Dakota to California to Alaska to Maryland and finally to Georgia. Initially, I flew the KC-135A (Air Refueling) Tanker for 4.5 years and the KC-135Q Tanker (refueled the SR-71) for 5.5 years. Then I volunteered for a more challenging assignment flying reconnaissance aircraft (RC-135S) 12 miles offshore of the (Russian) Kamchatka Penninsula. My next assignment was to the US Navy as an Operational Test Pilot on the E-6A (Boeing 707) TACAMO aircraft. I was the only Air Force asset assigned to a 700 man Navy unit. Every day brought something different but it was still a very fun and rewarding job. Finally, as I was approaching the end of my career, I was assigned to a KC-135R unit in Warner Robins, Georgia. I really didn't want to fly tanker aircraft again and I got my wish. An opportunity to fly the two USCENTCOM EC-135 aircraft opened...Expand for more
and I quickly seized the moment. Within weeks, Operation Desert Shield (Iraq invading Kuwait) started and we began flying General "Stormin' Norman" Schwartzkopf and members of his Command Staff to his overseas command location. For the next 4 years, I continued to fly the USCENTCOM EC-135 aircraft as well as the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) EC-137D (Boeing 707). In 1997, I retired from the Air Force and began looking for something else to do. My wife and daughters didn't want to move, so I worked at several part-time jobs (mainly to keep my sanity). In 1998, I was offered a job in Milwaukee instructing Air Force and Air National Guard pilots in a KC-135R Flight simulator and filling the Site Manager position. I have now worked over 11 years for FlightSafety Services Corporation and will probably stay for another 7-10 years, as long as my health allows me to. So ---- I left Illinois looking for adventure and found it before returning home. People always ask what my favorite assignment was and I respond "they all had plusses and minuses, but they all were also fun and exciting." From -70 degrees F wind chill in Minot, ND to 100+ degrees F in Marysville, CA and back to -63 degrees F ambient temperature in Fairbanks, AK, every location we lived in brought new challenges and fulfillment.
