David's Story
Life
Dave, The Appliance Wizard runs the first nationwide independent web-based major appliance telephone helpline (appliancehelpline.com) .After being a programmer and systems analyst for 7 years, I moved to Tucson, AZ and started a used major appliance retail store. In 1997 I started Appliance HelpLine. During my years in Tucson I handbuilt a large house on 10 acres in the mountains, and with my wife of 34 years, raised our daughter, now in a doctoral program at Berkeley. Collectible automobiles have been my other passion. 37 years after first seeing one I acquired an Avanti in September 2002. That remains my latest project. Though somewhat rusty, modern languages (Spanish, Russian, German, some French)remain my other interest, along with science fiction, esp. alternate universe subjects. College
started in Engineering at Case Inst. of Tech. Realized I didn't want to become an engineer. Didn't go to classes much, joined a fraternity, ran for class office, ran a radio station from my dorm room, agitated for cafeteria workers' rights, transferred at end of freshman year. American Univ., modern languages and Philosophy. 2 years while working full-time to pay for it. Transferred to U. Md. for 1+ semesters, dropped out. Back to NY, got job, got engaged. Back to school NYU (Bronx campus. 2 semesters plus a summer Russian course at Columbia and had a 4 year BA in only 5 years and 5 schools. Had 30 credits in my Philosophy major w/ emphasis on Philosophy of Science and Symbolic Logic. Remember little or no detail, but did learn to think critically--which was the heart of my education. I try to use that at all times to this day. What else can I say?
