David's Story

Hello classmates, I browsed through this website and saw a lot of names that brought back fond memories from about 40 years ago. Some of you completed the question and answer portion of this website, but most of you didn't. After reading through the questions I see why! I found them to be too generic and not nearly personal enough. I thought I would try the other option - tell my story. Here it goes. The last time I saw most of you was our senior year at LHS when I was set to go to Penn State. In May of my senior year I got cold feet about going to such a large school. I contacted Catawba College, located in Salisbury NC, and made arrangements to attend college there. I took a Trailways bus to Catawba and saw the campus for the first time when I arrived as a freshman. Catawba is a small, private, liberal arts college. Some prior LHS students attended Catawba, ie Ed Koontz, Gene Appler, Randy Zepp, Bruce Crouse, Ronnie Crouse and others. I learned about Catawba from our classmate, and my good friend, Rich Appler. I'm sure you're familiar with Rich's unfortunate death many years ago. My undergraduate years were fairly uneventful. My draft lottery number was 333, so I didn't need to worry about the draft. A few friends and I did some some skydiving. We quit after one guy broke a leg and another guy nearly bit through his tongue when he landed. My degree was in Business Administration. I married Janet soon after graduation, in September, 1972. She is from New Jersey. We met at Catawba. Since she had just completed her sophomore year when we were married, I ...Expand for more
took a job with Metropolitan Life selling life insurance until she graduated. A few years later I became a Certified Public Accountant and went to work for a regional CPA firm. A few years later, in 2003, another CPA and I started our own firm, McCoy & Hillard, CPAs PA. I did all the the usual public relations steps such as joing the Country Club and then becoming it's president, joining the Chamber of Commerce and then becoming it's chairman, sitting on board of directors of non-profit organizations and then becoming chairman. I'm still doing the CPA thing. I enjoy it very much, It's like being paid to put puzzles together. I have a very competent staff that is able to shoulder quite a bit of the work. However, I still work long hours because there is so much to do. In my spare time I enjoy spectator sports. I go to most of Catawba's home football games, and some away games. The NFL team Charlotte Panthers play about 50 miles from my home. I usually go to at least one game a year. I am a NY Yankee fan. I subscribe to the MLB cable channel and watch most of the Yankee games. I travel to a client's office in NYC about three times a year and usually go to a Yankee game at least once a year. I also enjoy concerts and plays. I go to some at Catawba College, some in Charlotte, I've been to several in Las Vegas and several Broadway shows in NYC. Janet and I have been married 36 years. We have two children, ages 32 and 28 and a 14 month old grandson. My mother passed away in November, 2008 and was laid to rest in Hanover. OK, that's it....Somebody elses's turn.
