Life
I joined the Navy in December of 1966. After ten years, I decided to remain and make a career of it. I spent 22 years in a variety of ships and shore stations, finally retiring to sunny Pensacola, Fl in 1987. I attended Troy State University for a couple of years, then went back to work for the Navy again as a photographer. I was the supervisor of photography at NAS Pensacola until September 0f 2009 and love every minute of it. I married a wonderful young lady in 1972 from Sarasota, Fl. We have two boys and a girl; and now eight grandchildren. For recreation my wife and I metal detect and I also scuba dive along with my sons and daughter-in-law. Am beginning to enjoy my golden years and look forward to retiring again soon.
Since returning to Pensacola, we have managed to survive three major Hurricanes, Erin and Opal in 1995 and "Ivan" the Terrible in 2004. The Naval Air Station had massive devastation and I lost the Photo Lab where I worked along with all the equipment that we thought would be secure. It was like entering a war zone and even now, four years after the fact, we are still recovering. My family and I were blessed though as the only damage we sustained were downed trees and the scare of a lifetime as a Tornado passed through our backyard about 0130 in the morning. But life goes on and we are looking forward to retirement in 2010.
We have recovered from all the hurricanes and the damage they inflicted on our area of the Florida Panhandle and continue to enjoy life in "sunny" Florida. In March of 2005, my wife and I had the pleasure of being able to tour the Holy Land for twelve days with thirty others from three churches in our area. What a wonderful blessing that was for us. In August of 2005, I also had the opportunity to travel to Vicosa, Brazil on a mission trip with my church and then in November a trip to Lima, Peru. What we as a church were able to accomplish in such a short time was truly amazing and as much a blessing to us as to the people we ministered to. November 2005, we watched as our oldest son shipped out to Iraq. It was hard to take even though I was an...Expand for more
Army "Brat" for 19 years and spent 22 years in the Navy traveling all over the world. It's certainly different when it's your own flesh and blood. In August 2006, I once again traveled to Brazil, along with my wife and five others. What a joy it is to minister to such open minded people! September 2006 found us in Garmisch Germany where we met up with our son who was on R&R from Iraq. It was a fantastic two weeks revisiting places I visited as a teen living in Augsburg. We returned to Brazil in August 2007 for two weeks and my oldest son, Kyle traveled with us. We were able to travel back to the town we were in last year and visit with those whose lives so touched ours. It was great! I retired in September(2009) after working for the Government for 42 years and am spending more time with my family here in Florida and my extended family in Brazil. I am certain that we will be returning to Brazil, if not for an extended period of time, then at least yearly. The mission work there is truly gratifying.
2020 and 2021 have been pretty rough for most people with having to mask up and hunker down because of the C-virus. Lori and I are pleased to say that we have been pretty healthy until Jun of this year. I went to the ER on Jun 6, 2021 feeling poorly, not something I could put my finger on, just not feeling good. Got inside and BP was sky high heart was racing, and some other issues as well. They did an EKG and I don't remember much after that, just a swirl of activity. After a few hours I finally got a room and was told I was in Afib. I was later told, I had also had a heart attack. Several days later and $20k worth of pharmaceuticals, I was taken into the OR and had a quadruple bypass done. I have been home now since the 21st of Jun and am recovering rather well though slowly. I couldn't have picked a better team of Doctors and Nurses to take care of me during my stay in the hospital and after care. They were all top notch professionals who helped an old man feel comfortable in the setting. I give God all the praise for bringing me through this ordeal. I should be good for another 10 years! Lol!
