Doris's Story

After graduation from high school, I went to Bible College for a year. After a few months I joined the U.S. Navy and became a Physicians Assistant. While still in the Navy I met my husband who was in Bible College in Norfolk, VA while I worked in Portsmouth, VA in the Navy. We moved to Texas shortly after I left the Navy. We spent a few years in Texas and Oklahoma where my husband pastored Independent Baptist churches. In 1969 he felt led to be a foreign missionary and we went to Zaire, Africa in the bush country to help another missionary who was a doctor. I assisted him in daily surgery and care of the sick. My husband led groups of workers and learned the African language. Because of political unrest and unable to preach the gospel any longer, we left for the U.S. along with all the other missionaries in the area. In 1976 we left for Brazil, South America to serve as missionaries for 22 years. We came home after this and my husband pastored two other Independent Baptist churches. We decided to go to another foreign field to help another missionary in Thailand from our home church. We spent a few months there and returned again to Texas. My husband became ill with Pulmonary Fibrosis and after two and one half years on oxygen and bedridden, he passed away on June 15, 2009 at home. I am left with 48 years of great memories and four sons, daughters in law, and seven grandchildren. I also have my first great grandchild who was born in 2009. Quite a heritage I think. I will continue to work in our church here in Texas and try and be a blessing to everyone ...Expand for more
with whom I meet. I am on Facebook daily and post my husbands sermons in English and Portuguese every day. Come visit me and be a friend! Oct. 2011. I just returned from a visit to Brazil to see the churches my husband and I started there. It was a good time to reflect, and one of memories to last for a lifetime. As this will probably be my last trip, (because of age) I will cherish each moment I had with everyone and all the photos my son and I took while there. It was good to see the Brazilians continuing to preach and teach their own people and to see the physical and spiritual growth in the new churches as well. I know my husband would be pleased to see what I have seen, but most of all to know these people who we spent 22 years of our lives teaching and him preaching, are doing all this on their own now and continuing to win others to Christ and establishing new churches to the glory of God! 2012--Our fourth son John (at 37) just surrendered to the ministry. He is the music director in our church at present and attending our Texas Theological University in our church along with his wife. That now makes two of my sons who will be preachers. Our oldest son is an assistant pastor in West Texas. At nearly 72, I am continuing to study and keep my mind active by working on my degree in Missions at present and hope to finish next year. I will receive credit for the 27 years we spent on the foreign mission fields. My mother is going to be 99 this year and I think it is because she always kept her mind active along with her spirit. Let me hear from YOU! Doris
