". More about Dawn:"I grew up in a wonderful family with parents who loved us - and truly loved and cherished each other. We sang everywhere we went, performed together in church choirs and community theatres and loved to spend time with our extended family. I graduated from Chino High School in 1974, then attended 3 years at Citrus College where I was a member of the Citrus College Singers. This was a great experience and I will always value my time there and I have lots of great memories. I went on to spend 2 years at Cal Arts in Valencia. I kind of over-did things - tried to do too much - had a bit of a breakdown and decided to leave school. Then, of course, real life hit me hard and I had to start earning a living. While I stumbled along trying to find ...Expand for more
some work that would support my singing habit, I spent a lot of late nights singing in Country Western talent contests (Urban Cowboy was big about this time). I made a few hundred bucks extra many months singing "Crazy" and "I Fall to Pieces" and other classic country tunes in lots of clubs all over Southern California. Oh, before I started doing this I had met Wayne Parker (singer, song-writer, bass player) and we co-wrote a song called "Born Again" which I recorded the demo for. At that time, Wayne thought I might make it as a perfomrer and suggested I take a stage name. We came up with Jennifer Light. So, I was performing in the contests using that stage name. About that same time, I auditioned to sing back-up for a young singer from Oklahoma who was going to do some shows arouind L.A. I got the job - and began singing with Sam Harris, who later won the very 1st season of Star Search. About this time I began working for Sierra Messenger Service in Hollywood, where my cousin Jan worked. The bookkeeper was an actress/singer who soon joined me backing up Sam. She was also responsible for me going to an open audition that started a chain of events that lead to my getting my Equity card on Broadway - when I took over the role of Sarraghina in "Nine" directed by Tommy Tune. Since then, I've sung at Carnegie Hall (with Sam Harris), Beverly Theater (also with Sam), was in the ensemble of Candide at the Ahmanson (I'd gone back to my real name by then) and I've been a singing waitress at Mario's Restaurant - in the desert. Now that I'm being laid off from Scholastic - I hope to get a job that won't take me out of town so much so I can audition for shows. I miss the "roar of the grease paint and the smell of the crowds"!".
