Dawn's Story

Life Although it's hard to summarize 26+ years in a few paragraphs, I do enjoy reading other people's personalized bios, so I'll give it a try... What I deciced to "be" when I grew up: After high school I worked for a few years and went to community college in the Valley. In 1980 a friend talked me into enlisting in the Air Force with her and what was meant to be a short-term deal turned into 11 great years in the service. The Air Force sent me to language school at the Presidio of Monterey where I studied Russian for a year. I worked as a military linguist for six years, then as a public affairs rep/journalist for most of the next five years. I lived for three years in northern Japan and five years in southern Italy--both wonderful and life-changing experiences--and came home to the States in 1990, stationed in Colorado, where I've been ever since. I took my honorable discharge after Gulf War I, and worked as a grant writer/editorial and research assistant for a few years at the Denver VA Hospital while I finished up a degree in English education and earned a teaching credential. In 1995 I accepted a teaching position in Colorado Springs and moved down here. I have been a teacher for eight years now, which I love. I advise our high school's yearbook and newspaper (following in Mr. Graves's footsteps), I teach photojournalism and dig...Expand for more
ital photography, and I participate in state and national scholastic journalism associations as a program coordinator and publications judge. I also have taught honors American Literature and I team teach a class called American Studies, which is American history and American literature rolled together into one class. In my "spare time" (yea, right...) I write part-time for a local newspaper and do quite a bit of photography--some for pay, some for art. I live in Monument, Colorado, (just north of Colorado Springs) with my husband, Frank, in a house in a forest which we are renovating. My daughter Jamie (21) and son David (19) are grown now and making their ways in the adult world in Denver and San Antonio, Texas, respectively. Frank and I play golf, ride our motorcycles, and are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to lose the excess 40 pounds we each carry around these days. Running is the latest, sure-fire solution... :-) I take great pleasure in teaching my yearbook and newspaper students how much the work they do now will mean to their classmates in the years to come. High school memories--however problematic, sweet or long ago--stay with people their whole lives. I am so fortunate to still be able to call Sue (Trefiletti) Perkins and a few special others from high school my friends after all these years. That, in itself, is a remarkable thing.
