Dawn's Story
Life
Graduated from Judson College, a wonderful school, in 1980 with a double major in Math and Sociology. Married Randy in 1981.
Daughter, Laura, was born in 1991. She is in 9th grade, her first year of high school. Her favorite subject is math, but she also enjoys the cooking and sewing classes. She is in her 5th year playing flute. Laura retired from gymnastics the day after winning the 2004 Kansas state title for balance beam in level IV for 12 years and older. She worked very hard for that achievement. During her prior meet, she received a 9.7 on beam. I was ecstatic.
We enjoyed Laura so much that we had a son, Alex, in 1994. He is in 7th grade. He had a wonderful year in 4th grade. He had a male teacher who made learning a lot of fun. Alex is so much more fun than I ever thought a boy would be. He is a definite blessing from God and I tell him so. His current interests are iPod, iPod, iPod, basketball, pool and Family Guy. Currently, he is sharing a passion, with his father, for getting an old Mustang like the one in the original "Gone In 60 Seconds".
I am a Software Engineer at Honeywell in Olathe, KS. I an working in the aerospace division. The team I am working with is programming the GPS for a new card to go in airplanes. I live in Olathe, KS and love it. My family attends Blue Valley Baptist church in Overland Park, KS.
School
My school bio begins the year before I started school. Southside did not have kindergarten so I had to wait until 1st grade to start school. I had an early birthday so I was eager to start. I would get up early and watch the kids go to the school bus.
I started school the next year. I was excited and scared. My teacher was mean. I learned in spite of her. I knew very little when I began. I couldn't read a single word, I didn't know the complete abc's and I knew very few colors. Kids I started school with and remained with all through school we...Expand for more

My favorite teacher in elementary school Mrs. Judy Heckert in 3rd grade. She was fair and didn't have pets. She taught us how to make Christmas decorations with paper mache', how to make puppet heads with sawdust and she showed up slides of her time in New York. She made complete sets of multiplication flash cards for each student. I still remember using those cards to learn multiplication at home. Our school was new and didn't have playground equipment until after Christmas break, so she taught us how to play kickball. I loved it! Everybody did.
Another teacher I was fond of was Mrs. Smiley in 6th grade. I have several friends who share my fondness for her; they are Doyle Hudson, Alisa Dawn Lewis and Tammy Miley. We all keep in touch now due to Classmates.com and I have enjoyed our renewed friendships. Another special friend I made in 6th grade was Jon McClellan.
Junior High and Senior High was an unhappy time for me. I had great friends, but life in general was not happy. The best thing to happen to me in Junior High was when Miss Walker moved me from 8th grade math to 9th grade Algebra along with some of my classmates. I loved math and felt held back. This move helped me to expand my knowledge in math. I loved algebra. My best friends during this time were Alisa Lewis and Debbie Stroud. I treasure the fact that Alisa is a part of my life again.
In high school, I tended to hang around with people in the class of '77. Special friends I remember are Mike Ward, Marie Harrel, Curtis Hamm and Joyce Cooper. We shared classes and Honor Society together. Through classmates, I have had the chance to get to know Benj Trolinger better and he is also a special friend.
I would not want to do my school years over again, but if I did, I would take more time to get to know my classmates better. I have enjoyed doing that years later.
