Dawn's Story
Life
Hi there!
I actually moved from Houston and Scarborough my ninth-grade year. That was 1983. I moved to Austin with my Mom, and finished high school here at Crocket High.
I went to UT, got a psychology degree in 1993, with a minor in physiology. I studied audiology and speech-language pathology for an additional two years. I'd planned to become an audiologist, but life had other plans for me.
My husband wanted to go to school for a while, so I worked to put him through a brew master course. He became a brewer at Celis Brewery in Austin. His love affair with beer became a huge problem, and we divorced soon after that, in 1996.
Since then, I've been living and working in Austin.I didn't go back to get my audiology masters because I fell into a job doing technical support for IBM. I supported Java on AIX. AIX is the Unix operating system that IBM uses on its huge supercomputers. I rose up in the ranks to a software engineer, where I stayed for many years. Now I'm out of the technical support arena and am doing information development and customer satisfaction projects for the IBM "System p" line of supercomputers. I completed a handbook that is out on the ibm.com site. I'm very proud of that.
Though I'm not doing what I thought I'd be doing, I'm the happiest, healthiest, and wealthiest I've ever been. I live in a lovely area in the west hills of Austin, I have a cool and well-paying job, and lots of free time for learning guitar, taking dance lessons, swimming, jogging, and playing with my friends. My picture shows me rejoicing in the hot tub!
I'm currently in a committed relationship with a musician/network engineer/carptenter. I told my Mom, "Something for everyone! I enjoy the musician aspect, you enjoy the 'has a day-job' aspect, my Dad enjoys the 'can build a free-standing structure' aspect!" We met at a New Year's Eve party, and we've kept at it ever since.
I'd love to hear from people who I knew "back in the day," and find out how they're doing. Drop me a line!
Peace and love, Dawn
School
I started off at Benbrook Elementary.
I remember some people from there: JoAnn Gee, Michael Moore, Ron Krc, Troy Coleman, Christine Carlson, etc.
Then I went to Ruby Clifton Middle School, where I ran into: Michael Kuhlman, Steve Bartkowiak, Corby Stepanski, Steve Everett, Wade Wood, Clay Connely, Kevin O'Neal, Deana Tucker, Juanita Quiroz, Marisa Duran, Susan Trevino... and so many others.
Onward to Scarborough, where I stayed for only a year. Most of the people from Clifton went to Scarborough.I was working on looking like a punk at the time, but believe it or not, I made goo...Expand for more
d grades!
Then I moved to Austin and attended Crockett High School. Punk didn't fly in Austin, so I moved to a softer new-wave look. By the time I got to college, I was a notch or two down from downright preppy.
College
I attended the University of Texas for a long, long time. I had to work my way through school, which I did by waiting tables and for many years managed a cookie store in Dobie Mall called "The Chippery."
I was interested in the mind-body connection, in perception and cognition, so I slid right into the field of Psychology. I liked the physiology part of it, so racked up numerous hours in the College of Natural Sciences, learning about physiology and anatomy.
I knew by my 3rd year that I was not going to get a masters or PhD in psychology, so when I chanced upon an audiology course I knew where I wanted to go next. I went ahead and got my degree in psychology and started studying audiology and speech-language pathology. I took two years worth of undergrad classes to prepare me for the masters in audiology. Problem was, the audiolgy department at UT was so competitive and so limited.. only 11 people per year were taken in, and 5 of those were from within Texas, the other 6 had to be from out of state. I could have gone to Texas Tech or UT Galveston, but I didn't want to leave Austin, and neither did my husband. I needed a break from school, since I'd been there for almost 9 years, I decided to just work and let my husband go to brewer's school.
I've had a lot of technical training from IBM to administer their supercomputers (pSeries machines). And I went back and took some computing courses from St. Edward's University.
Sometimes I fantasize about going back and getting my audiology masters, but I really like my job at IBM.
Workplace
Oh, you'd be amazed. I've worked all over the place. I've:
waited tables at numerous restaurants
worked at Texaco
managed a cookie store for 5 years
worked at Foley's
worked at Walgreen's
worked for 8 years at the University of Texas:
in the Financial Aid Office
in the Admissions Office
in the Health Education Office,
where I was the Designated
Driver Program Coordinator, and
I gave health presentations on
the dangers of drugs and
alcohol.
I've worked at IBM since 1998:
technical support on AIX for
computer crashes

installation issues

Development Kit on AIX...
became a software engineer at
this point
information development and
