Daniel's Story

Hello fellow classmates from Wyoming High School, My name is Daniel Allen Daymon. I was born a "New Years Baby" January 1, 1949 in Mesa Arizona. I went to schools in Arkansas, Grandviille, Caledonia and Wyoming Michigan. I graduated from Newhall Junior H.S. in 1963 and Wyoming High School in 1967. "Back in the "Day" as they say, I was very involved in school sports, school activities and most of all FUN! Then there were the girls, the school dances and of course my hot rod cars etc. It was the best time of my life! I had a ball - and if I had a "Time Machine" - I would go back to that wonderful time to live it - all over again! My only regret back then is not studying more and getting better grades. I was pretty much a class "cut up, joker, goof off etc". I got kicked out of class more than once for pranks, silliness etc.. Mrs. Titcombe kicked me out of her English class for reading a sci-fi book. I really wasn't reading it at the time but it dropped on the floor and she thought I was reading it. We argued, I lost. I later got to have Mrs Yared as my new English teacher whom I loved and by the way, had a BIG crush on her! Silly teenage boys. I very much remember more than a few stern speeches from our then Principal Mr. Ken Davis. Oh, and did I mention the many 7th hours of detention (LOL). However, I made up for all my dalliances later on. To me at least, during those years there was plenty of time to get serious later on - right! Especially during those times of "Civil Rights Unrest & Riots", the assassination of President Kennedy and of course the Vietnam War Years etc. And don't forget the "Space Race", the "Peace & Protest" movements, the Black Panthers, Skin Heads and much more! Such interesting times - those days past that we all shared. I later graduated from Grand Rapids Junior College (now G.R.C.C.) and got a Honor's Scholarship to Grand Valley State University where I received a "Bachelors Degree of Science" in "Industrial Management, technology & Marketing". I was on the "Dean's List" and graduated with "Honors" at both G.R.J.C. and G.V.S.U. Later, I received my "Master's Degree" and then a hard earned "Doctorate" from "S.O.H.K.". A very popular school - better known as the "School of Hard Knocks". LOL - life sure seemed that way at least to me being married so young and with children. The constant worry of being drafted to Vietnam with a family until the war was over was always on my mind. The recession of the early to mid 70's, the lack of jobs and the gas shortage wars were also big issues back in that time period. Where have the years gone? I am now retired as a former "Director of Plant Operations, Maintenance and Safety". My last years working were in Health-care helping to run a local older hospital while at the same time building a new hospital here in Western Michigan. Those stressful times put a few extra "years on me" and added plenty of gray hair that I wish now would stay fully on my head. Before that time, I was a supervisor then a manager in management in manufacturing & maintenance for 20 years or so. Prior to going into management, right out of high school in 1967, I was first a "Production" & "Chemical Lab" worker then a "Security Guard" at a local factory in Grand Rapids Michigan. I then went into the trades like my "Millwright" Father and "Carpenter" brother. I apprenticed to a "licensed" "Stationary Engineer" in "Power Plants". Later, I was a "Journeyman" Machinist, Welder, Painter, Metal Fabricator and Mechanic. I was in Sales & Marketing for a couple of years but I wasn't fond of traveling "out of town / state" with a growing young family and new wife. My wife Mary Kay Gerloski-Daymon (W.H.S. Class of 1969) worked for and has now retired from Spectrum Health Care. She has worked mainly at Spectrum and earlier at Mary Free Bed hospital for over 30 years. Mary Kay has now joined me in retirement, October 2012. Now she can stay up late at night with me but she is more of a "early bird" and I am a "night owl" by nature. Retirement is nice - but the money sure was better when we were working :). Mary Kay and I, have the distinct honor of being married as one of the longest of our class of 1967. I think in the top 2! It will be 54 years on July 19, 2019. Lol, who would have guessed that Mary Kay and I would be married that long! I bet some of my old girl friends and assorted other dates are surprised to hear of this minor miracle. We have 2 daughters the oldest Kim is 52 years young (in 2022). She is married and lives in Wyoming Michigan. She is a "Marketing & Sales" consultant for Xerox. However, as of yet no grand children - only a grand dog. Our youngest daughter Kelli is 50 years young (in 2022...Expand for more
) married and is a "Activities Director" for a Muskegon Nursing home. Kelli and her husband live in North Muskegon area. She has 2 grand dogs (more dogs - do I see a trend here!). How about some human grand children! Oh, well wishful thinking so far. Both our girls graduated High School from Jenison Michigan where we lived for 20 years. They both played Varsity Tennis and were actively involved in school affairs (daughters like Father). Kim graduated from Grand Valley State University and Kelli attended Muskegon Community College. Mary Kay and I had a big 22 lb Tabby Tuxedo black & white Cat. His name was "Webster" and he was my constant "Companion". He was 17 years old September 28, 2013. I wrote a poem of the same name about my past & present pets, friends and family. This poem is a sobering subject about our "Companions" in life; expressing the joys of life - death and renewal. Webster sadly passed away on January 10, 2014. It was one of the saddest days of my life to date. He was 17 years and 4 months old when he left us. The last line of the poem states - "Like tears in the rain one cannot see tears that fall from the heart". I am enjoying my retirement. I have joined a "Writer's Group" and am participating in several functions of this new group. Writing has been a long time catharsis & passion of mine since high school. Are you surprised at this from a former class rebel, clown & jock who never - ever took homework home. I drove most of my teachers crazy because I didn't take my studies more seriously. Ah, such was life back then! I am working on my writing now that I have the discretionary time to do so. I have been published but not for numerical compensation. My hope is to be published in the future. A little pay would be nice especially on a retiree's income. My wife and I currently reside in Byron Center Michigan, actually closer to Cutlerville Michigan. We enjoy visiting our children, playing with and dog sitting the grand dogs, going to the beach, movies and vacations when possible. We now have a little toy poodle named Lexi. We enjoy her very much and she is mostly Mary Kay's constant companion. Lexi passed on Oct 26, 2021. Loved that little dog! We adopted her in March 2014. Lexi is a rescue dog. She is a apricot colored bundle of curly hair and energy! She loves to cuddle and be held. Typical female! I enjoy watching sports on TV but like live sports better when possible. I also like all TV shows with anything technical, mechanical, or really anything where I can learn and or see new things. I am a news, sports and tech junkie and I try to stay up on current events. I love FOX, ESPN, SCI-FI & Velocity to name a few TV shows that I watch. I also enjoy reading, writing and doing subsequent research on various topics. I am also very involved in doing historical & biblical research. Along these lines, I also do volunteer work in the "Christian Ministry." When I have the energy, I try go to a local health club to help keep the body in shape. As I get older the mind seems to get better at least most of the time.- the body does not! "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak". I bought a Suzuki Cruiser C-50 Boulevard Motorcycle in the Fall of 2013 and toured the country side when the weather was nice. Having a cycle again brought back old memories of former motorcycles. Yes, I may be getting older but I'm still young at heart! Update; as of the Fall of 2015, I sold the motorcycle and got a SUV. Does this mean I'm getting old! However, I did buy a high horsepower Mustang G.T. convertible so I'm still young at heart! Actually, I enjoy practically anything that catches my attention. So many things to do in life - so little time to do them all. Wow, where has the time gone! All in all - life is good! Classmates, may you all have lived and are living - a meaningful, healthy and happy life! Warmest regards, Dan aka Danny, Daniel (Senior Class of 1967) P.S.
