DeVon's Story
"Et tu, Brute" (also you, Brutus) when Julius Caesar was assassinated by his friend Brutus in 44 B.C. was stabbed to death at a meeting of the Senate. Annually I recall this event on the 15th of March, known as the Ides of March, thanks to our Latin teacher Miss Duerson. More importantly, I pause, with much respect and love, to remember Miss Mary Stewart Duerson, a great educator! Connie and I took our little tribe (Jonathan, and our twin daughters Amy and LaNeda) one summer from Michigan to Louisville to visit Miss Duerson. Every Christmas, we would exchange greetings. In a 1984 letter, she wrote "As for me, 1984 has not been a good one for me health-wise. Last February I fell right here in the hall by the door of my room at Westminster Terrace, causing two vertebrae in the lower right lumbar are to collapse. Hospital and 6 days in our Health Care Centre, I returned to my room. Glory be!...I am back on my job with flowers and plants in our nursing home building and with the library. My back no longer hurts, but I tire very quickly. My legs feel like wet spaghetti!" Then, Christmas 1985, the last time I heard from her, she wrote "It's a good thing that Christmas comes, for it means I hear from 'my boys and girls' whom I still think of with fondness." I think she passed away in 1987. So, Miss Duerson, thank you, love you, and bless you! An interesting informational note, Miss Duerson was going to attend a funeral one morning, and they couldn't find a substitute Latin teacher. So she got permission from Miss Woerner for me to fill in for her for two periods. I was surprised and honored, (Ha!). I'm going to recall the Ides of March, but I'm not wearing black.
