Dean's Story

Hi, I'm Dean Bauer. Here's my biography. After graduating at Pekin High in 74, I worked full time at Caterpillar from March 75 - Jan 81. During this time, I joined the Army National Guard from Oct 76 - Oct 80 while I was working at Caterpillar Tractor, in Mapleton and East Peoria. I became interested in the Regular Army while in the National Guard [from Delevan], and joined the Active Army in Oct. 1980. I was trained in helicopter maintenance; and I worked on CH47C AND D model Chinook Helicopters throughout my 20 years in the Active Army. I enjoyed the Army, because I was able to travel to many places in the States and around the World, work and crew on helicopters, and make friends with many different people of diverse ethnic groups. I was trained at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo. [Basic training]; Ft. Benning, Ga.[Infantry School]; Ft. Greely, Alaska,[Winter Warfare School]; Ft. Eustis, Va. [CH47 Helicopter Maintenance School]; Ft. Rucker, Alabama [CH47 Technical Helicopter Inspector School]. Along with maintenance, I was a crew member in flight platoon for 9 years. I crewed in S.Korea, England, Belguim, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Boznia, Iraq, Kawait, Saudia Arabia, and many states. I spent 2 tours of duty at Ft. Campbell, Ky; 1 tour of duty at Barbers Pt., Hawaii; 2 one year tours of duty at Camp Humphreys, South Korea; 1 three year tour of Duty in Giebelstadt, Germany; 1 five year tour at Ft. Carson, Colorado,[a member of a high altitude search and rescue company]; and 1 tour of duty at Ft. Bragg, N.Carolina. I was married in 1985, while I was stationed in Hawaii to a beautiful Fillipino girl, whose name is Ida. She gave birth to our only child, C. J....Expand for more
Bauer, on 23 Oct. 1996. We've been married for 23 years. We were stationed in Germany from Feb. 95 - Feb. 98. I retired from the Army on 1 Dec. 2000, at Ft. Bragg, NC. I was in the 1st Gulf War and spent one year of Peace Keeping Duty in the Bulkans. I've had the experience of traveling in 18 countries due to my time in the Army. Some countries, I don't ever want to go back to,such as Southwest Asia. I had a few close calls while I was in the Service; and I believe only by God's Grace I am still alive. Unfortunately, I have had some friends and associates not make it back. Since retiring from the Army, I've been employed in the Law Enforcement Field with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office out of Charlotte, NC. I like the climate much better in the Carolina's in the winter-time. We attend worship services at First Assembly of God in Concord, NC. I'm a Carolina Panther football fan. I'm a St.Louis Cardinal baseball fan since 1967. I still pull for the Fighting Illini and the Bradley Braves. I follow the news from Pekin regularly from the Pekin Times on line edition; because I still like to know what is happening in Pekin. During the Christmas Holidays, I miss the Pekin Holiday Basketball Tournament. I always get a case of Highschool tournament "Basketball Jones", It is definitely a first class high-school basketball program. The state tournament in Illinois is better too! Don't take it forgranted. I also miss, Pekin High's first class prep band at the basketball games. They don't have prep bands at the highschool basketball games, in this area. I still attend highschool football and basketball games. I have never out grown it.
