Dean's Story
I study a great deal, but never went to college.
I am not religious, but I am an ordained minister.
I travel a great deal, but only by car.
I am not fond of heights, but take care of a lighthouse.
After carefully manipulating classes (including creating one) in high school to manage to get on honor roll, I worked in a TV repair shop for the summer and attended United Electronics Inststute (now ITT Tech) in Portland for a year and worked various jobs. After a year at Crown Zellerbach and a 9 month strike, I moved to Hawaii and built houses. I started with the phone company in 1980 as a clerk, and retired from making phone books for Dex.
I worked with a youth group for many years.
I am a trained hypnotist and did a great deal of research work in the late 80's with it. I am a State registered Hypnotherapist..
I became involved in Lighthouses in 1998 after hiking 11 miles to see one. I served on the Board of Directors that takes care of the New Dungeness Light Station near Sequim, Washington. I also belong to, and work with, about a dozen other groups that take care of lighthouses around the country. I have climbed eight out of nine towers in Oregon (three at night) and have visited over 60 so far.

rctic Circle in Alaska. We traveled the entire Alaskan Highway and part of the Dalton (Haul) Road. Along the way I encountered a large Grizzly (see photo). The weather was very nice with 70 degrees at the Circle. We had to turn back due to very bad roads on the van. I plan to return and finish the drive to the Arctic Ocean.
I have lived in Spokane Valley, Washington since January 1987. We are in the same house we bought in 1988, a little two bedroom cottage on a half acre. My wife Diane and I have two kids.
I am now disabled due to spinal cord damage. Ironic that I take care of a lighthouse and cannot climb stairs well. I can still drive, and do so a great deal, in spite of gas prices..
12/23 Update: I have since worked five years at Spokane International Airport. Followed by being a Night Auditor at the Airport Ramada. Presently I have been a long-distance medical courier transporting lab specimens between Spokane, Wa and Missoula, MT overnight. 400 miles round trip.
My brother and I have driven (me driving) across the country twice. In over 50 years since getting my driver's license, I have driven over 1 million miles, yet I was never a commercial trucker.
I do love driving.
I am preparing to completely retire in a year, due to poor health.
