Dean's Story
Life
After graduation in 1967 from Annapolis High I attended AACC for 2+ yrs. I lost my student draft deferment (long story), and was drafted. I had been in a 4 year relationship with Marcia Sheppard (AHS class of 1968) which sadly fell apart shortly after my entering the Navy.
I was discharged from the Navy after 2+ yrs as a Conscientious Objector (another long story). After my discharge I was angry about losing the life I had. I lost any direction except to drink and party and I never returned to college to finish my degree. Fortunately, I outgrew the party stage, but I do still enjoy a drink with friends. Although I never finished college, later in life I did receive formal training in electronics, computers/IT, and business management.
A short time after I left the Navy I became a long-distance tractor-trailer driver. I wasn't looking for that, but free training and a job came along. Later, I owned my own tractor-trailer at one point and partnered with my then-wife (no home-we lived in the truck).
Over the years I broke up periods of truck driving by working as a railroad brakeman, taxi driver in D.C., bowling alley manager, security officer, hospital department manager, distribution center manager, truck fleet manager, safety manager for a large truck fleet, and more. I...Expand for more
've enjoyed meeting a lot of interesting people from all backgrounds and social and economic strata. I could never imagine working in the same job or career field, day in and day out, for a lifetime.
I'm now married to a great girl, Pam Gockley. Since 1997, we've owned a successful network of Internet web hosting companies and training/consultation services, Vigilant.net, where I am also the chief technology officer, although I'm currently semi-retired. I also assist my wife with the operation of The Camel Project, a violence and bullying-elimination non-profit charity she founded five years ago.
We love to travel and have vacationed in various parts of the US, and often in France and other parts of Europe.
Until recently, I've always been politically active. In 2004 I ran and won as a Green Party candidate for a local township auditor office here in Pennsylvania. After two+ years I had to resign the office when Pam and I moved to a neighboring municipality.
I proudly still hold to many of the values of the 60's- individual freedom, peace, love, and respect for all people. I consider myself a liberal, progressive, environmentalist, and animal-rights person.
Thanks for reading this. I would be interested in hearing from any AHS alums that have the time to message me.
